Sumitomo Electric Selected as Official Sponsor for the 1st Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. is pleased to announce that it has been selected as an official sponsor for the Vocational Skills Competition of the People's Republic of China, to be held for the first time by the Chinese government in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, from Thursday, December 10 to Sunday 13, 2020. The Company will support the competition by providing optical fiber fusion splicers and fiber optics related products to 30 representatives selected from all over China for the competition of "Information Network Cabling skills"

At the 4th Session of the 12th National People's Congress, 2016, Premier Li Keqiang of the State Council delivered the Report on the Work of the Government, in which the policy of "fostering a craftsmanship spirit" was presented. Since then, importance has been attached to continuously refining craftsmanship in the Chinese manufacturing industry. In particular, this competition is intended to raise the skill levels of young engineers, and also foster a social climate of attaching importance to technology by extensively providing the general public with an opportunity to come into close contact with such skills.

At this event, approximately 2,500 elite representatives from all over China will compete in a total of 86 skills. Of these representatives, qualified contestants with excellent performances in 63 competition skills, which exclude China's unique skills that are not a part of the WorldSkills competition, will be selected to represent China in the 46th WorldSkills Competition to be held in Shanghai in 2022.

It is expected that the competition will attract more than 100,000 visitors, and high-ranking Chinese government officials are scheduled to visit the event, thereby raising much interest in the event.

Selected as an official sponsor for the WorldSkills Competition four times in a row since the 42nd event held in Germany in 2013, the Company has supported the operation of the event. In addition, the Company's TYPE-82C+ and other optical fiber fusion splicers have been widely adopted by telecommunications carriers and construction companies in China. Highly recognized for their high performance and quality in fusion splicing, safety, and usability, related products of the Company have also been selected for use at the event.
