Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has developed and launched the coated cermet grade "T2500Z" for steel turning. The new grade features long tool life and improves stability in steel turning such as rolled steel, carbon steel and alloy steel.

Cermets, with titanium compound as the main component, have low affinity with iron, providing a glossy and beautiful machined surface on ferrous metals. Cermets have also been attracting attention in recent years for using only a small amount of tungsten, which is a scarce resource.

Sumitomo Electric has developed a new cermet substrate with excellent thermal conductivity in pursuit of a "glossy, beautiful and stable surface finish" that is particularly required for cermets, and has launched the coated cermet grade "T2500Z" combined with "Brilliant CoatTM" that significantly reduces reactivity with ferrous metals.

Coated Cermet Grade T2500Z

1. Features
  1. Excellent machined surface quality
The new cermet substrate with excellent thermal conductivity, improves thermal crack and notch wear resistance. In addition, Sumitomo Electric's original coating technology "Brilliant Coat®" is used to achieve excellent wear and adhesion resistance, providing stable and excellent machined surface quality in various work materials such as rolled steel, carbon steel and alloy steel.
  2. Excellent lubricity and wear resistance
"Brilliant Coat®" has excellent lubricity and significantly reduces reactions with ferrous metals. As a result, adhesion of the work material is greatly reduced, preventing tearing, and the wear resistance has been improved by over 1.5 times as compared to the Company's conventional products. Not only does T2500Z provide beautiful finished surfaces but also it has an extended tool life in the finishing process.
  3. Extensive lineup
The lineup of indexable inserts has increased to 539 items. This extensive selection of items helps meet a wide range of machining needs.
