Products & Technologies

July 10, 2018
Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has started to deliver the contact wires that will be installed over a line distance of approximately 1,340 km for the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) Construction Project being promoted by the Government of India. The total length of the wires to be delivered will be approximately 3,400 km, which is the largest volume of order in our overseas railroad-related business.

As part of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Project (DMIC)*1 that has been launched jointly by JICA*2 and the Government of India, the Western DFC (between Delhi and Mumbai) and Eastern DFC (between Delhi and Kolkata) are currently under construction.

Construction of the Western DFC is being undertaken by Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited, a subsidiary of the Indian Ministry of Railways. The Sojitz - Larsen & Toubro Limited (India) consortium has received an order for the electrification of the Western DFC. In appreciation of the superior durability and heat resistance of our contact wires, as well as the abundance of our delivery records in both Japanese and overseas rail markets, the consortium made the decision to use our contact wires for an approximately 1,340 km section of the corridor. The total length of the wire will be approximately 3,400 km, which is the largest deal we have made in railroad-related business overseas. Our contact wires will be used to electrify the corridor between Rewari and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.

This is the first time Sumitomo Electric is delivering contact wires to the market in India. Taking the delivery of the contact wires as an opportunity, we will continue to supply high-quality contact wires to railroads in India, which has one of the world's largest rail infrastructures, to ensure their safe and steady operation, as well as to modernize them, and to contribute to the further progress of the economy of India.
