Sumitomo Electric Develops and Launches New Turning Grade AC1030U for High Precision Machining

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has developed a new physical vapor deposition (PVD)* coated insert grade, AC1030U, and launched it in November 2016. This new grade enables high-precision machining and beautiful finish of small components with stability and long tool life used mainly in automobiles, IT and electronics and medical equipment and devices.

There are growing demands in the automotive industry that manufactures small components for cutting tools with higher cutting efficiency, lower friction, higher wear resistance and higher strength. In addition, these cutting tools are required to save labor costs (by enabling automatic/unmanned operations) while ensuring trouble-free and stable tool life.

To meet these demands, the Company has developed the AC1030U grade for high precision machining for a wide range of applications over an extended period of time. The longer tool life reduces insert consumption and tool replacement frequency while the improved machining efficiency reduces machining time, thereby significantly reducing machining costs.

1. Features
  1. In addition to the improved grinding quality of the chipbreaker, a smooth coating layer that adheres strongly to the cutting edge ensures a sharp edge over an extended period of time and achieving excellent unblemished surface quality throughout the insert's life.
  2. The coating adhesion strength has been increased to two times that of conventional coatings by utilizing the Company's proprietary ABSOLUTE TECHNOLOGY "AbsoTech Bronze™ coating. With this huge improvement in coating adhesion strength, coating peel-off and chipping resulting from work adhesion are suppressed in the small parts machining of alloy steel, stainless steel, heat-resistive steel and pure iron etc. under various conditions.
  3. The FYS type chipbreaker has been developed for finish turning with excellent chip control. With a narrower breaker width than FY type, the FYS type chipbreaker ensures stable machining of pure iron, mild steel and other materials whose chips were previously difficult to manage.
