When it comes to reliable, high-quality solutions for data communication networks, Sumitomo Electric has a wide variety of options for organizations of any size. Product categories include high-density fiber cable for data centers, air-blown fiber solutions, fusion splicers, optical connectors, patch panels and cassettes, splice cabinets and more. An overview of these products is provided below. For more detailed information, please see the website of Sumitomo Electric Lightwave.
Overview of optical fiber cables and related products
Ultra-high-density fiber cables contain thousands of optical fibers inside a compact cable. This enables a larger number of fibers to be installed in the same amount of duct space as before. The key technology is our Freeform™ Ribbon, the pliable ribbon fiber within the cable. Available with 200 μm or 250 μm fiber. Compatible with multi-fiber connectors.
Indoor fiber cables (riser cable, plenum cable) are available in various fiber counts and with different options, such as superior flame resistance or interlocking armor for enhanced durability.
Air-blown fiber solutions offer major reductions in installation time, as well as scalable cable management and significant cost-saving for future network requirements. In an ABF installation, compressed air is used to quickly extend optical fibers through one end of a tube cable and out the other.
Fusion splicers from Sumitomo Electric boost work efficiency through the inclusion of many features that ensure fast, high-precision splices of single fibers or ribbon fibers. Key features include automatic clamping adjustment, dual ovens, and rapid heating. High durability against dust and moisture is another advantage.
Optical connectors come in field-installable varieties, such as the Lynx-CustomFit™ splice-on connectors that enable quick, easy, and reliable terminations in various circumstances. Many other options, including pre-terminated assemblies for data centers, are also available.
For fiber termination and cable management, available options include Fiber Optic eXchange (FOX) cassettes, LGX cassettes, high-density cassettes, tap modules with MPO interface, interconnect panels, rack mount patch panels, fixed patch panels, and high-density splice cabinets.
Optical fibers for industrial or large-scale applications
In addition to the products described above, Sumitomo Electric offers optical fibers with unique characteristics for industrial applications and for large-scale deployment.
The Z Fiber and Z-PLUS Fiber are pure silica core fibers that feature extremely low attenuation. At 1550 nm, attenuation is 0.170 dB/km and 0.168 dB/km, respectively. These fibers also provide excellent performance (low loss) in radiation environments, and can maintain stable performance over time in settings with high hydrogen content. As for use in high-temperature conditions, the Z Fiber and Z-PLUS Fiber are available with a special heat-resistant coating or encased in a stainless steel tube.
In situations where performance and cost need to be balance, hard plastic-clad fiber (H-PCF) is an option to consider. H-PCF is the combination of a silica core and a hard plastic cladding. It offers significantly lower attenuation than all-plastic fiber, while being more economical than all-glass fiber. Other advantages of H-PCF are easy connectivity and high strength. H-PCF is widely used in traffic monitoring systems, electronic toll collection systems, and factory automation systems.
