Decarbonization

TargetsAchieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050

Sumitomo Electric Group has set greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets of carbon neutrality under Scopes 1+2 (own manufacturing greenhouse gas emissions) by 2050. As a milestone, Sumitomo Electric Group aims to achieve an annual reduction of over 2.5%, totaling more than 30% reduction from the fiscal 2018 level by fiscal 2030. Additionally, Sumitomo Electric Group is working toward a 15% reduction in Scope 3 (the upstream and downstream parts of the supply chain) by 2030 compared to fiscal year 2018 levels. The 2030 targets have been certified by the international initiative the "Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)".

Energy Saving Initiatives

Sumitomo Electric Group's activities promote the achievement of zero for the three major energy wastes (air leaks, standby power, and heat dissipation loss). Through our “Energy Saving 200 Kaizen” activities, which involve CO2 reduction diagnostics and energy-saving improvements, Sumitomo Electric Group visualizes waste in production equipment using measuring instruments such as flow meters, power meters, and thermal cameras, and reduces CO2 emissions by implementing improvements.

Renewable Energy Adoption

Sumitomo Electric Group is working to reduce CO2 emissions by installing solar power generation facilities in 22 sites in Japan and 34 sites outside Japan, utilizing the generated electricity for factory operations. In addition to on-site installations, Sumitomo Electric Group is also promoting the establishment of off-site solar power plants and will consider the use of off-site wind power generation in the future.

Circular Economy

IndicatorsToward a Circular Economy

Sumitomo Electric Group has long promoted the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (3Rs) to reduce environmental impact, including minimizing defects at production sites, reducing waste generation, promoting internal reuse and the recovery of valuable materials, and reducing water consumption. Toward FY2025, Sumitomo Electric Group has set targets, including achieving a 94% recycling rate for waste generated in production processes. To further reduce environmental impact, Sumitomo Electric Group will now design products and services with recycling and reuse as fundamental considerations from the outset stage. This approach aims to minimize the use and consumption of new resources, maximize added value through efficient resource utilization, and ultimately realize a circular economy.

Major InitiativesPromoting Raw Material Recycling

Promoting the recycling of copper, our primary raw material, and rare metals, which are limited resources

After providing products to customers, the recovery of resources from used products plays a significant role in building a circular economy. Sumitomo Electric Group collects used electric wires and cables, optical fiber cables, and cemented carbide cutting inserts, recycling them as raw materials for new products.

Copper Recycling

Sumitomo Electric Group dismantles used electric power and communication cables at its affiliate Sumiden Material Processing Co., Ltd. and recycles the recovered copper using a copper smelting furnace known as a Tilting Reverberatory Furnace owned by our company.
