An average car today contains hundreds of wires, bundled in wiring harnesses, that are installed to transmit electricity to different parts of the car, as well as collect information from sensors to control powertrain performance, temperature inside the vehicle, etc. Our aluminum wiring harnesses offer all the functionality of conventional copper wires, but with less weight to help make cars more fuel-efficient. Other key components we provide include magnet wires, flexible flat cables, sintered metal parts, and anti-vibration rubber products that absorb or suppress vibrations from the engine and road surface to ensure safe and comfortable driving. With the growing adoption of electric vehicles, we are also providing specialized products such as pipe-shielded wiring harnesses and quick-charging connector assemblies.
Sumitomo Electric develops products that play an integral part in today’s broadband communication networks. In many communities, fiber-to-the-home infrastructure for high-speed Internet services is built using our low-loss optical fiber cables. And in data centers, operators are ramping up their data-handling capacity by installing our ultra-high-fiber-count ribbon cable. We continuously improve our optical fiber technology, as well as develop related products such as high-speed optical transceivers and fusion splicers. In the area of wireless communications, we provide specialized electronic components to support LTE mobile networks and satellite communication networks.

Environment & energy
For over a century, we have been developing the wire & cable technologies that are used to deliver a stable supply of electricity to communities and industries. Among our products for electric power transmission are overhead power transmission lines, underground power cables, high-voltage submarine cables, and superconducting wires. Now, to help power companies meet growing demand for electricity from renewable energy sources, we are introducing technology such as large-scale redox flow battery systems for power grids and a monitoring system for operators of solar power plants to detect power loss among connected photovoltaic cells.
Sumitomo Electric offers a variety of products for different industrial uses. For example, we offer prestressed concrete steel strand for the construction industry, sintered parts and specialized metal wires for cars and trucks, diamond grinding tools and thermal control devices for semiconductor manufacturing, optics for laser machining, and superior quality magnesium alloy. We also offer many types of cutting tools for precision metalworking. These tools are made from our cemented carbide IGETALLOY (which has diamond-like hardness and steel-like toughness) or from our cubic boron nitride SUMIBORON or sintered diamond SUMIDIA.
