Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), in cooperation with the State of California and public utility company San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), started the demonstration of the United States' largest redox flow battery system in California.
Following the start of the project, a redox flow battery system (2 MW x 4 hours) was constructed for a power grid at a substation in San Diego. Demonstration started in March 2017 to evaluate the management of surplus electricity and regulation of grid frequency and voltage fluctuation. Data on performance in the transmission and distribution grid is collected to improve the system's economic value.

Our Redox flow battery system was adopted in a fiscal 2012 emergency demonstration project for large-scalepower storage system in a joint project with Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Inc., in the operation of a large-scale storage battery system at Minami-hayakita Substation, which started operation in December 2015. It is the world's largest-scale Redox flow battery system, with rated output of 15 MW,and storage capacity of 60 MWh. By March 2019, Sumitomo Electric plans to develop a control method for suppression of frequency variation with the storage battery as a power source for frequency adjustment, develop an operation method to handle surplus electric power (lower margin) with a storage battery, and evaluate the performance of the Redox flow battery, with the aim to move toward commercialization.

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has made a contract with the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN) in May, 2016, and completed the construction of a 1 MW concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) power generation plant in the Kingdom of Morocco in November of the same year.
Encouraged by the successful commencement of this project, Sumitomo Electric will promote its CPV business not only in Morocco but also in other countries, in the Middle East and the rest of the world, that have high solar radiation.
