R&D Organization

  • Advances the mid/long-term management plans (e.g., R&D targets and vision), establishes new research activities, facilitates open innovation, and manages development cost.

  • Develops new technologies and products that contribute to improving the environment, safety, and security performance required of next-generation vehicles, by utilizing material and infocommunication technologies, etc., that have been refined through many years of operations.

  • Develops businesses that meet the technological changes in the electric power infrastructure field (expanding the use of renewable energy, and upgrading the electric power infrastructure using infocommunication technologies).

  • Develops communication technologies (that underpin broadband communication), various management systems (for monitoring social infrastructure), and service application platform (that underpin the above technologies).

  • Underpins the Group’s manufacturing capabilities, helps develop new products/open up new business opportunities, and supports the technological foundation through advanced analysis technologies and CAE (Osaka, Itami, and Yokohama).

  • Creates new, unique materials (metallic and inorganic), and achieves process innovation using our original ultra-high pressure and powder metallurgy technologies, etc.

  • Supports the Group’s extensive business fields by developing metal/polymer materials technologies and wiring/connection technologies derived from electric wire technologies.

  • Promotes R&D of compound semiconductors that serve as basic materials for light-emitting devices, photo-detectors, applied devices for optical communication, and wireless communication devices, etc.

  • Develops optical fiber-related technologies and highly functional products that are used in optical communication networks and data centers; contributes to the development of a smart society through applications in the consumer and industry fields.

  • Develops products for the two main markets in infocommunication (optics and wireless) through vertical integration of creative technologies from compound semiconductor processes and optoelectronic precision implementation to the design of optical transceivers.

  • Promotes R&D and business development in life sciences (medical equipment/components) and materials and resources (magnesium alloy, water treatment, agriculture) (i.e., new business fields set out in the mid-term management plan).

  • Promotes the development and commercialization of silicon carbide (SiC) technologies, from substrates to devices. (SiC is expected to be the next-generation material for power semiconductor devices.)

Overseas Operations

  • ICS works on the mission of investigation and research on new technologies and markets in the U.S., as well as identification and development of new core technologies to create next-generation global businesses (ICS is located in Silicon Valley, U.S.)

  • Supports the Group’s production and development operations in analysis in China. (The center is located in Suzhou in East China.)

Focusing on our business fields which are essential for society: the three fields of "mobility (automotive)," "energy," and "communications (ICT)"; "environment and infrastructure" which those three fields are integrated into; and the two new fields of "life science" and "resources," we aim at creating and globally providing new values covering the scope from materials to systems and solutions through ceaseless innovation.
