Nowadays, I keenly recognize anew that major paradigm shifts are actually taking place not only in the industrial community but also in other various socioeconomic fields and regions. One change can lead to another change that spreads globally at accelerated speed. Such changes are not something our conventional ideas and solutions can be effectively applied to, and there is increasing uncertainty.
History teaches us that, at a time of radical social transformation, "a non-conformist with a solid backbone" who are powerful and courageous enough to achieve a breakthrough and who can think differently from others should take the lead in the world and organizations. You may recall figures like these who played important roles at historical turning points in each country, for example, during the Meiji Restoration in the case of Japan.
On the other hand, for us in the industrial community, these paradigm shifts could provide a great opportunity, though it is difficult to cope appropriately with changes. To continue sustainable growth and development in the wave of globalization, we must further promote organizational diversification and development of human resources with leadership potential.
On September 1, 2011, the Sumitomo Electric Group adopted its Global Human Resource Management Policy (Global HRM Policy), thereby clearly stating the Group’s commitment to truly global human resource management. Details of the Global HRM Policy are described in the article in this issue. The Global HRM Policy stipulates that we develop global leaders who can understand and share the Sumitomo Spirit and the Sumitomo Electric Group Corporate Principles, and can lead highly diversified teams.
In the future, we will make the Global HRM Policy known to all Group companies and executives to ensure that personnel-related measures will be implemented in line with the Policy and to create an environment where excellent personnel recruited from around the world can work with peace of mind. We will also strive to develop an organization that enables diverse human resources to fully utilize their abilities under the guidance of global leaders who support global business operations, and to mutually stimulate and influence one another in a positive manner, so as to generate new vitality.
