On February 28, the SEI Group CSR Foundation, for which I serve as president, held a donations provision ceremony (and interaction event), inviting researchers receiving monetary contributions and financial support from the organization.
In accordance with the Sumitomo Electric Group Basic Policies on Social Contribution, the foundation, established in 2009, works under the themes of "Respect for Human Resources," "Attaching Importance to Technology," and "Creating a Better Society and Environment." Specifically, the foundation provides monetary contributions for university courses, and financial support for academic and research activities, in order to contribute to promoting academic activities. The foundation also grants scholarships in order to develop human resources.
This fiscal year, a total of eight university courses, consisting of two new recipients and six continuous recipients, will receive monetary contributions from the foundation. Moreover, the foundation will provide financial support for 28 academic research projects selected from among 166 applicants.
At the donations provision ceremony, four of these recipients reported on their research themes, which were provision of problem-solving-oriented mechanical engineering education to foster human resources for the next-generation manufacturing; tsunami marine hazards; pathological clarification of various diseases through a sugar-chain biological approach and its clinical application; and water, food, and health risks in Asia. All the themes, though varying greatly from one another, were highly significant in terms of social contribution and very interesting. The donations provision ceremony was followed by an interaction event, where I was able to listen to research details. At the same time, recipients expressed their gratitude directly to us for having provided continuous support or having helped them to explore new fields, making me realize once again the importance of this foundation.
Although the amount of our donations is limited, we sincerely hope that our support will help to increase the motivation of the researchers, which will lead to further advances in science technologies, as well as to further development of Japan as a technology-oriented country.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to all the screening members, who worked with enthusiasm in examining many applicants during their summer bon holidays, and also all the members of the SEI Group CSR Foundation for their daily hard work.
