Hello, I am President Osamu Inoue of Sumitomo Electric.
Launched by Chairman Masayoshi Matsumoto in 2007, the President's Blog has for 10 years now been attracting many readers both inside and outside the company. As the Company's new president, I would like to continue this blog, and enjoy disseminating my own thoughts from my own perspective, how I feel about various events, and what I would like to achieve. I hope you will continue to enjoy reading the blog.
On July 6, one week after I took over as president, we held a group-wide kaizen activity (G-katsu) presentation competition at our Osaka Works, where I listened to presentations by six groups selected as representatives from among our business units and other organizations.
Initiated in 1958, this event marked its 60th anniversary this year and drew 166 group companies, which worked on 2,895 themes. As the proverb "Perseverance leads to success" says, the G-katsu is now an important activity for eliminating unreasonableness, waste, and inconsistency, and serves as a cornerstone of our manufacturing. I was impressed that each team gave such an excellent presentation. I hope to see them continue that cooperation with colleagues at their workplaces.
On the very morning of the day, I was visited by the two teams that had won gold prizes at a previous G-katsu presentation competition held in China. With the G-katsu event held in China marking its 11th anniversary this year, I hear that the competition has become even more invigorating. The two teams were invited to give presentations at the above-mentioned G-katsu event in Osaka, and I was impressed by their presentations as well as by the Japanese teams'.
Next year, we will hold a global G-katsu presentation competition to celebrate our 120th anniversary. Ten group companies will enter the event: six from Japan, and one from China/Taiwan, ASEAN, North America and Europe. I'm really looking forward to the event. At the same time, I feel very much reassured to see this activity conducted across the world.
