61st (FY2016) Shibusawa Award

Sumitomo Electric won the 61st (FY2016) Shibusawa Award from the Japan Electric Association’s committee for the memorial project to commemorate Dr. Motoharu Shibusawa’s winning of the award of cultural merit. The Shibusawa Award recognizes excellent achievements in ensuring the broad scope of electrical safety. This year, the award was received jointly by Sumitomo Electric and Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. as a group for developing electric wire with high corrosion resistance.

The two companies had jointly developed alloy-type, marine-salt-corrosion resistant overhead transmission cable, which uses corrosion-resistant aluminum-alloy-coated steel wires. The award was granted in recognition of the material’s considerable contribution to ensuring the reliability of power transmission cables and prolonging the durability of such cables.

Letter of Appreciation for Our Contribution to the Reconstruction from the Sinkhole Accident on a Road near Hakata Station

Sumitomo Electric received a letter of appreciation from Fukuoka City in recognition of our contribution to the reconstruction from the sinkhole accident that had occurred on November 8, 2016 on a road near Hakata Station. With Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. taking the lead, we worked together with subcontracting companies in replacing cables, thereby contributing to early reconstruction.

Invention Incentive Awards in the FY 2016 Kinki Region Invention Awards

Our optical transceiver and amorphous-carbon-coated tool and its manufacturing method won Invention Incentive Awards in the FY 2016 Kinki Region Invention Awards, organized by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation. The awards are to honor those who have accomplished excellent inventions in the Kinki region, made great efforts to work such inventions, and contributed to the guidance and promotion of invention, and the development of human resources.
