(1) Flat cable Sumicard™

Sumicard™ is a laminated, flat cable consisting of multiple flat conductors arranged in parallel. Being thinner than conventional cables, Sumicard™ contributes to the downsizing of equipment and devices. The Sumitomo Electric Group has also developed a 150℃-heat-resistant Sumicard™, satisfying the requirements of high temperature resistance for use in convertors for electric vehicles, in-vehicle electric chargers and electronic control units for the driving system in plug-in hybrid vehicles, in addition to the durability needed in automotive components and expanded applications in automatic driving systems.

(2) Spark plug electrode alloy

Spark plug electrode alloy

A spark plug has the role of igniting the gas mixture in the car engine. The Sumitomo Electric Group produces and markets a unique nickel alloy developed by the company for spark-plug electrodes that offers both high-temperature oxidation resistance and anti-spark resistance in various fuel oil environments. The alloy has been adopted for the electrodes of many automotive spark plugs around the world and is appreciated as a material that has excellent durability in severe environments where repetitive sparks occur at nearly 1000℃ in a combustion chamber.

The Sumitomo Electric Group developed and started commercial production of flexible high-voltage wires for high-voltage harnesses that connect inverters and motors in hybrid electrical vehicles. This product has outstanding features, including 150℃-heat-resistance and high dielectric voltage withstanding. Its excellent flexibility also saves space in device layout and contributes to the expansion of inner car space for a driver and passengers, thus improving their comfort.

(4) Lithium-ion battery terminal, tab lead

A tab lead is a lead wire that draws out electricity from lithium-ion batteries. The tab lead produced by the Sumitomo Electric Group employs directly surface-treated conductors, achieving excellent durability. It also has an insulation layer that suppresses thermal deformation, providing high insulating and sealing reliability and contributing to high performance and long-life of the batteries. Taking advantages of these properties, it is widely used in car batteries.

(5) Steel wires for reinforcing tires

Steel cord

A steel cord is made of high-strength, high-carbon steel stranded wires, with its wire surface brass-plated to ensure adhesion with the rubber. It is adopted as an important reinforcement for radial tires. The Sumitomo Electric Group produces its steel cords at Sumitomo Electric Tochigi Co., Ltd., which boasts world-class productivity, and the latest factories in Thailand and others.

Through joint development with tire manufacturers, the Group provides the market with excellent products that improve driving stability and riding comfort, satisfying ever-more sophisticated market requirements and gaining a higher reputation among customers.

Bead wire

A bead wire is high-carbon steel wire with a bronze-plated surface. It is used to ensure a tight fit between the wheel and the tire, playing an important role in achieving driving comfort and stability. Bead wire production has been consolidated into Indonesia, from where the products are delivered to tire manufacturers around the world.

As in the case of bead wire, a cable bead ensures a tight fit between the wheel and the tire. Using stranded wires, the cable bead demonstrates much better stiffness and tire shape stability, thus substantially reducing tire weight and improving driving stability. The product is currently developed and produced by Sumitomo Electric Tochigi Co., Ltd.
