PT. Sumiden Hardmetal Manufacturing Indonesia (SUMIA) was established in Indonesia in June 2012 as a cutting tools manufacturing base of Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal. Indonesia, home to the world’s fourth-largest population of approximately 250 million, is now enjoying continuous economic growth. In this country, sales of two- and four-wheeled vehicles are rapidly increasing. In line with the growth in the number of Japanese-affiliated companies doing business in Indonesia, the local demand for cutting tools is also growing. In response to this trend, SUMIA is aiming to expand market share in the country by supplying products and services whose quality is as high as those available in Japan. To do this, the company is promoting local production under the philosophy of “local production and local use,” and also providing the service of re-sharpening tools.

Aiming to Become No. 1 in Quality by Enhancing Communication with Local Staff Members

PT. Sumiden Hardmetal Manufacturing Indonesia (SUMIA) is located in the Karawang International Industrial City (KIIC), an industrial park located approximately 60 km east of Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The company manufactures and sells cutting tools.

As an engineer, I was transferred to SUMIA in June 2013, when the company was very busy for launching plant operations. Although there were some problems, such as a delay in the delivery of necessary equipment into our plant because it had been stopped by customs, the plant successfully commenced production in July 2013, thanks to cooperation from those concerned both inside and outside the company. Upholding the fundamental philosophy of ensuring the same quality level as we do in Japan and meeting delivery deadlines without delay, we are working on establishing an appropriate plant system that can gain customers’ trust. However, I sometimes have difficulty ensuring smooth communication with local staff, due to the language barriers, their different sense, and different customs. While solving various problems step by step through better communication, I would like to contribute to making SUMIA the No. 1 plant in quality in cooperation with all the members of the company.

Hello, I’m Ery. As a plant manager, I am responsible for managing safety, quality, cost, and delivery. My impression of the Sumitomo Electric Group is that it is a large corporate group that has a long history and that is developing businesses in an extensive range of fields. I would like to make SUMIA a company that can supply tools with high quality and high performance to customers in a short delivery time.

Hello, I’m Dwi. Since the SUMIA’s establishment, I have been engaged in payroll, tax calculation, visa acquisition for Japanese staff coming to Indonesia on business, and the employment of all the staff at SUMIA. I am proud that I was able to become a member of the Sumitomo Electric Group. In compliance with the Sumitomo Spirit, I will continue to work very hard in the future as well.

Traffic Jams in Jakarta

According to a traffic jam level survey conducted by the UK company Castrol of 78 cities and regions around the world, Jakarta is the most congested city in the world. Once you get stuck in a traffic jam, you cannot move your car at all, in which case it sometimes can take four hours to cover the same distance that normally takes less than one hour. To mitigate traffic congestion, the city has launched a subway construction project. However, the number of car lanes has been decreased due to the effects of traffic regulations on the construction, making the congestion even worse. It seems that there is still a very long road to relieving traffic congestion.

Indonesian Cuisine

Although many of you might have an image that Indonesian cuisine is hot and spicy, the reality is that the dishes are milder than what you probably imagine. I feel that nasi goreng (fried rice) and mi goreng (fried noodles), for example, will please the palates of Japanese people as well. Like Japanese cuisine, Indonesian cuisine is characterized by a style in which rice as the staple food is accompanied by side dishes, which might make Japanese people feel all the more familiar with Indonesian cuisine.

World Heritage property on Java Island

When it comes to tourist sites in Indonesia, Bali Island is renowned as one of the most famous places. In addition to that, Indonesia has many other famous sightseeing destinations: Borobudur Temple Compounds, Buddhist remains, and Prambanan Temple Compounds, Hindu remains, in Jogjakarta, are approximately 400 km east of Jakarta. Presently, Indonesia is home to the world’s largest number of Muslims, but these remains suggest that Hindu and Buddhism used to both be very influential in the country.
