Sumitomo Electric Exhibits at Japan International Machine Tool Fair 2014

The 27th Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF) 2014 will be held from October 30 (Thu) to November 4 (Tue) in Tokyo Big Sight. JIMTOF is where the leading machinery manufacturers from both inside and outside Japan gather under one roof to make their first announcements to the world about their latest machine tools and peripheral equipment. The exhibition enjoys more than 100,000 visitors from Japan and beyond every year. The Sumitomo Electric Group exhibits its newest products and technologies as a supplier of cutting tools, which are indispensable in machining.

Exhibition Highlights! New Products on Display in the Exhibition

■SUMIDIA™ Break Master™ LD type/GD type

スミダイヤ® ブレイクマスター® LD型 / GD型

We have newly developed the SUMIDIA™ Break Master™ LD type/GD type, a sintered diamond tool with a 3D chip breaker* at the tip of the blade. The SUMIDIA™ Break Master™ LD type/GD type are designed for cutting aluminum alloy, offering significantly improved breaking of the chips generated during the semi-finishing and finishing stages. The LD type is designed for finishing and the GD type is for semi-finishing. The blade is made of SUMIDIA™ DA1000, ultra-fine diamond particles sintered at a high density, in order to deliver excellent wear and fracture resistance.

*Chip breaker:
A projection or flute at the tip of the cutting tool to break down the chips generated during the cutting work

■New Titanium Coat for Stainless Steel Turning AC6030M/AC6040M

New Titanium Coat for Stainless Steel Turning AC6030M/AC6040M

Our AC6030M/AC6040M, utilizing a new titanium coating material, are highly recommended for tools to turn stainless steel. Stainless steel is widely used in car components and structural components of machines. It is highly resistant to corrosion and therefore does not require liquid coating. Together with its recyclability, the material’s eco-friendliness has steadily driven up demand over the years. However, stainless steel is not an easy material to turn as its surface can easily become harder and therefore tends to chip the edge of the turning blade. Also, its low thermal conductivity can cause high temperatures in the blade, resulting in plastic deformation. The AC6030M/AC6040M resolve these problems in stainless steel turning and provide extremely stable work over a prolonged period.

Coating the top surface of the blade with a newly developed boron-titanium compound provides significantly improved strength and surface smoothness, along with work stability. The AC6030M offers a chip resistance more than twice that of conventional coatings thanks to Absotech™ Platinum, developed using highly advanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) technology exclusive to Sumitomo Electric. With its significantly improved anti-deposition capability, the AC6030M is highly recommended for general stainless steel turning work.

The AC6040M inherited our exclusive super-multilayered thin substrate structure from its predecessors, while newly adopting the TiAlSiN coating technology for improved thermal resistance. Further, by applying newly developed cemented base material and surface control technology between the base and coats, the adherence of the coating was successfully improved.

The AC6040M boasts chipping resistance more than twice that of conventional coatings thanks to Absotech™ Bronze, developed based on Sumitomo Electric’s exclusive and highly advanced Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) technology, ideal for working with stainless steel pipe components such as valves, flanges, and joints. It is highly recommended for intermittent turning of stainless steel materials.

■RSX SEC-Wave Radius Mill

The RSX SEC-Wave Radius Mill is a cutter that can be used in mold grooving, ramping, and helical boring of hard materials such as stainless steel and Inconel. The body is designed to achieve both sharp cutting and rigidity in order to provide enhanced work stability by reducing the chattering vibration* that occurs when work materials cannot be stabilized or when working with tools with low rigidity. Further, the tool is also equipped with a unique insert positioning mechanism to make the mounting of inserts easier, enabling smooth and highly precise corner control.

*Chattering vibration:
Vibrations that occurs between a tool and the workpiece during cutting. Such chatter reduces the quality of the work surface, as well as shortening the tool life.
