Sumitomo Electric Hartmetall GmbH was established in 1981 as an EU sales company in the Hardmetal Division selling cutting tools. The company has so far established branches in France and Italy, as well as representative offices in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Russia and Turkey. Together with Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Ltd., a sales company in the U.K., the company is engaged in the sales of cutting tools and the provision of the relevant technical services across a wide area covering from Russia to South Africa.

The following is a report from SHG, which is endeavoring to expand its sales channels by introducing world-class new products to a market which is led by European manufacturers.

Expanding Our Sales Channels by Offering Technical Support for Cutting Tool Products in the EU Market, Providing Feedback on Market Trends, and Creating a New Business Flow through OEM

Since I was transferred to SHG in December 2004, I have been engaged in offering technical support for our products in the EU market and providing feedback to Japan on technical trends observed in the market. SHG’s cutting tools are used for the machine processing of metal parts, especially for automobiles and airplanes. High-precision processing methods and cutting tools for machine processing are still led by European manufacturers, and accordingly, the European market in this field is extremely important.

We hope to increase sales of our products in this field by providing technical services to our customers, introducing new products, and promoting other measures, and to give Japan feedback on technical trends, thereby contributing to the development of new products that will be highly valued across the world. On top of selling our own brand of products, we sell other companies’ branded products through OEM (original equipment manufacturer). In so doing, we are developing a new business flow that is not bound to the existing business flow and striving to diversify and expand our sales channels.

Hello everyone! I started to work for the engineering division in 2001. Currently, as vice-manager of the engineering division, I’m responsible for assessing and introducing our new products. It’s been 10 years since I started to work at SHG. Time really flies! I’d like to enjoy working at SHG for another 20 years until I retire.

On weekends, I work as a member of a rescue team on a river near my home, and am currently responsible for the team’s public relations.



Hello everyone! It’s 23 years since I started to work at SHG. Currently, as a supervisor in the procurement division, I’m engaged in procuring products from Japan and purchasing items from our manufacturing base in Southern Germany.

I really love watching soccer; I’m an enthusiastic fan of my local team Borussia Monchengladbach. I also like gardening and keep carp in the pond in my garden.

[Places of Interest] Characteristics of Germany with High Environmental Awareness
High Environmental Awareness Demonstrated Even in Daily Life

European countries, and especially Germany, have high environmental awareness. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, Germany decided to close all its nuclear power plants, and is now proceeding with the conversion to renewable energy. In this country, people’s great interest in the environment and in recycling can be found in any scene in their daily lives.

Limited Sales of Beer in Aluminum Cans

I guess Germany reminds many people of automobiles and beer. In this country, washing automobiles on the street is prohibited (perhaps to prevent pollution of groundwater). Unlike in Japan, you never see people washing their cars at home. In Germany, automobiles are always washed at gas stations or other designated car washing sites.

Meanwhile, beer is usually sold in bottles, rather than in aluminum cans as is the mainstream in Japan. Sale of beer in aluminum cans is extremely limited in terms of type and quantity. A deposit is imposed on beer bottles. After the bottle is collected at a specific machine installed at supermarkets, the consumer can receive a refund.

Contributing to the Effective Use of Recyclable Waste

There are collection points for glass bottles, paper, old clothes, and other items in every street. Glass items are sorted according to color before they are collected. I think that such a collection system should also be introduced in Japan
