Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), in cooperation with the State of California and public utility company, started the demonstration of the United States' largest redox flow battery system in California since March 2017 to evaluate the management of surplus electricity and regulation of grid frequency and voltage fluctuation with the redox flow battery system (2 MW x 4 hours) installed in a power grid at a substation in San Diego. In December 2018, the redox flow battery became the first example of the flow battery system connected to the United States wholesale power market set up by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).

MoroccoOperation of CPV and Redox Flow Battery in Morocco

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has made a contract with the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN) in May, 2016, and started operation of 1 MW concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) power generation plant in the Kingdom of Morocco in November 2016. In addition to the CPV systems, we have awarded redox flow battery system 500kWh (125kWx4h) from United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and started operation of micro grid demonstration since July 2019. Encouraged by the successful commencement of the project, Sumitomo Electric will promote its business not only in Morocco but also in other countries, in the Middle East and the rest of the world, in areas without electricity that have high solar radiation.

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. installed the Redox Flow Battery System (500kW x 3.4hours) into the John Cockerill (JC)’s MiRIS plant, the largest industrial energy storage station, in Belgium, and started operation from September, 2019. We intend to promote the sales in Europe region together with JC as strategic partner through the MiRIS operation demonstration of micro grid, peak shifting and demand response with 2MW PV systems.

Our Redox flow battery system was adopted in emergency demonstration project for large-scale power storage system in a joint project with Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Inc., at Minami-hayakita Substation, which started operation in December 2015. It is the world's largest-scale Redox flow battery system, with rated output of 15 MW, and storage capacity of 60 MWh. Sumitomo Electric develop a control method for suppression of frequency variation with the storage battery as a power source for frequency adjustment, an operation method to handle surplus electric power (lower margin) with a storage battery, and evaluate the performance of the Redox flow battery, with the aim to promote further commercialization.
