On June 12, we held an in-house Intellectual Property Right and Standardization Convention.
The half-day event consisted of a poster session, a lecture by Fellow Masahiro Asami from Fuji Film, a commendation ceremony for excellent activities, and reports on standardization activities. The main venue for the convention was this year again the Osaka Works.
Aiming to ensure that necessary information and knowledge were shared throughout the Sumitomo Electric Group, the event drew many participants mainly from the R&D and intellectual property areas. At the convention, excellent activities conducted over the past year related to intellectual property were commended, and some cases on standardization were reported.
In his lecture, Fellow Asami spoke mainly about Fuji Film's application and development of its technologies during the time the company was undergoing drastic changes in its business portfolio. His lecture made me realize once again the importance of intellectual property strategies in this age of rapid changes in operating environments, indicated by revolutionary changes in automobiles such as the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT). I would like to take this opportunity to express our appreciation to him for delivering the inspiring lecture.
Afterwards, I presented commendation certificates to applicants of excellent patents and departments active in patent application. Each time I attend a commendation ceremony, I feel very good. I guess that recipients no doubt experienced many difficulties before receiving their commendation certificates. I'm extremely pleased that I was able to commend them for their tangible achievements.
Subsequently, reports were given on three activity cases with especially outstanding results. Explaining how difficulties and problems had been overcome and how tenacious efforts had been made, the reports made me aware once again how the Sumitomo Electric Group is supported by such steady activities.
As I mentioned before, in this era of considerable changes in automobiles, such as the introduction of AI and IoT and progress in electric vehicles and automated driving, it is expected that we will have an increasing number of opportunities to develop new technologies and products for society. When the world is becoming even more borderless due to global operations, and the number of intellectual property disputes continues to increase, the significance of intellectual property activities and standardization activities keeps growing, making me feel once again that we need to take action even more strategically.
We hope that all the three sections of research, business, and intellectual property will continue working together as a single entity, raise their antennas to gather information, and ensure close communication, thereby generating better results than those of our competitors.
