Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. supports the 69th Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon to be held on Sunday, March 2, 2014 as the main sponsor. This prominent marathon race is organized by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, Mainichi Newspapers, Shiga Prefecture, Shiga Prefecture Board of Education, Otsu City, and Otsu City Board of Education, in cooperation with Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK).
The Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon is a men’s marathon race, with the start and finish lines set in the Ojiyama Athletic Stadium in Otsu, Shiga. As indicated by the fact that the 2014 race will mark its 69th anniversary, this is Japan’s oldest annual marathon race. In addition, this is the first race in the country’s history to be certified as a prestigious Gold Label Road Race by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
In line with the Sumitomo Electric Group Basic Principles for Social Contribution established in 2007, the Sumitomo Electric Group has been promoting various social contribution activities.
