President’s Welcome Message to New Recruits (summary)

April 2, 2013
Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.
Masayoshi Matsumoto, President & CEO

*This press release was issued on April 1, 2013 in Japan.

Congratulations on your employment, and my warm welcome to Sumitomo Electric on behalf of the entire Group. I am truly happy to have the variety of talented people who are all motivated and excited to lead the next generation in our Group.

This fiscal year marks the first year of our new mid-term management plan. In view of this, I asked our people at the beginning of this year to keep the three items in their mind: “Promote the globalization and diversity of our business activities,” “Enhance our R&D capabilities,” and “Strengthen the SEQCDD* activities.” To the new Sumitomo Electric employees, however, I would also like to make the following two requests as a way of expressing my expectations and encouragement.

*SEQCDD: Safety, Environment, Quality, Cost, Delivery, and Research & Development

1. Master the basics of your work, and do your work conscientiously
In traditional Japanese martial arts, there is a concept of “shu-ha-ri,” which describes the three stages of learning mastery: leaning the fundamentals, practicing the fundamentals using your ingenuity, and parting with the fundamentals to establish its own style.
In pursuing your duties as well, I would like you to be fully aware of basic rules and working procedures first and thoroughly adhere to them, let alone to comply with laws, regulations and social norms. On this basis, I expect you to play your roles vigorously, and gain experience steadily, which I believe will lead you to great success in the future.
2. Put your heart into it
The phrase “Banji-nissei,” a pivotal concept of the Sumitomo Spirit, tells us to do our sincere best not only in business but also in every aspect of our lives. I believe that if you handle a given task in a sincere and conscientious manner, you will eventually overcome any challenge, and that if you do your very best in your role, you will gain a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction that nothing else can replace.
In this turbulent time, where drastic paradigm shifts are undergoing in terms of both quantity and quality, I would like to ask each of you to put your heart into everything you do, bearing in mind that your attitudes can greatly affect our overall results.

In closing, I would like to extend my best wishes for your health and success in your working life. We are looking to all of you to be a full-fledged employee who is trusted and valued by people around you.
