Magnet wire
Magnet wire

Magnet wire converts electric energy to magnetic energy. It is an essential material indispensable for producing industrial motors, home appliances and automotive electrical components.

The company has two production sites in Japan, Shigaraki in Shiga (headquarters) and Taguchi in Niigata; four overseas production sites in Thailand, China, Indonesia and Malaysia; and one sales company in the U.S.A. In pace with our customers’ overseas expansion, Sumitomo Electric’s magnet wire business has a long history of overseas production. Sumitomo Electric Wintec (Thailand) Co., Ltd., established in 1969, is the first overseas production subsidiary of the Sumitomo Electric Group.

We have developed flat magnet wires for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs).

Among the main products used in the automotive electrical components field, we currently focus on magnet wires for driving motors and electrical components installed in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs). With a high level of appreciation from our customers, our flat magnet wires have been adopted for the latest HEVs. Being wound, rectangular wires eliminate the space that exists between round wires, contributing to reduced motor sizes and improved output. They are also excellent in terms of lubricity and film strength. Scratch-resistant wires that enable miniaturization of coils are used in many cars, and further applications are expected to be explored in the future.

Participating in the Shigaraki Fire Festival

Shigaraki town is well known for Shigaraki ware. To give thanks to fire, an essential input in pottery, and hope for safety, the town has been holding the Shigaraki Fire Festival every July since before the Edo period. Staff members, mostly young people, participate in this festival to promote interaction with the local community. While holding torches, the participants walk for about 50 minutes up to the shrine at the top of Atago Mountain. Near the end of the course, fireworks burst across the sky, creating a spectacular view.
