Powder Metallurgy Engineering Center (PMEC)

Sumitomo Electric Sintered Alloy, Ltd. (OSS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric and the mother factory of its sintered product business, in May 2013 established the Powder Metallurgy Engineering Center (PMEC) at its main plant.

Sumitomo Electric Sintered Alloy, Ltd. (OSS)

OSS, with its head office in Takahashi, Okayama, was established in 1972 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric to produce parts from iron powder by using powder metallurgy technology. Since sintering is well-suited for producing intricately shaped, high-accuracy structural parts in high volume, OSS products are widely used in the field where reliability and availability are required, such as automotive parts, home electric appliances, and industrial machinery. With Sumitomo Electric assuming business planning and sales and with OSS concentrating on development and production, the business of sintered products is promoted globally in Japan, North America, Europe and Asia.

Please Explain about the Facilities in the Technical Showroom and the Evaluation Equipment Room.

The Technical Showroom tries to illustrate OSS’s unique technical know-how in a comprehensible way, by using panels, video images, samples, models, and demonstration equipment.

The Evaluation Equipment Room houses various testing equipment for oil pumps, including a performance tester, durability tester, and noise and vibration (NV) tester. Additional equipment for evaluating individual parts, such as transmission and engine parts, will be introduced.

Panels and video images help visual understanding of OSS’s unique technical know-how.   OSS products and awards they have received are exhibited. A monitor display on the wall shows vehicle models in which OSS products are used.

■What Is PMEC?

PMEC stands for Powder Metallurgy Engineering Center. The PMEC consists of two facilities: the Technical Showroom, which provides customers with OSS’s core technologies, such as modeling, material and processing technologies; and the Evaluation Equipment Room, which supports evaluations of individual parts, tasks that have so far been done by customers. There is no similar facility in inside or outside Japan; the PMEC is one of the largest technical centers for sintered products in the world.

PMEC Has Three Functions.

1) Product evaluation service

PMEC conducts pump performance evaluation, durability testing, and material evaluation.

2) Exhibition and presentation

PMEC provides a technical showroom and powder metallurgy school.

3) Promotion of development of sintered parts

PMEC facilitates technical transfer and education of trainees from overseas affiliated companies.
