Group Company of the Month: SESMI

Sumitomo Electric Semiconductor Materials, Inc. (SESMI) was established in 2000 at the time of the merger of the U.S. sales divisions handling compound semiconductor substrates manufactured by Sumitomo Electric Group companies in Japan. Targeting customers in the U.S., Japan, and Europe, SESMI was founded as a grinding plant of wireless communications gallium arsenide (GaAs) substrates mainly used in mobile phones. While the crystal growth of GaAs substrates is performed at Sumiden Semiconductor Materials Co., Ltd. in Kobe, the grinding is conducted at SESMI.

Struggling to satisfy customers’ technological requests regarding mobile phones

SESMI is located in Hillsboro, in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, which is situated in northwestern U.S.A. Since our establishment in 2000, we have been processing and manufacturing GaAs substrates, a material for wireless communications devices, such as mobile phones, and selling compound semiconductors. In tandem with the recent widespread use of smartphones, we are turning into the main base for Sumitomo Electric Group’s semiconductor business.

I was transferred to SESMI in May 2012. Currently, my responsibilities include responding to customers’ technological requests and issues regarding manufacturing technologies. Depending on the trends in mobile phones, an end product, customers’ demands regarding quality, specifications, and deliveries always change. To take care of such changes, I work in cooperation with the plant and the sales division.

■Profile of Local Staff Members

Eddie Jimenez

I joined SESMI in 2004, and became a group leader of the plant in 2007. It is quite challenging but rewarding to achieve a monthly production target and meet customers’ delivery requests.

We work hard, respecting the communication with team members and teamwork.

Amy Garand

Since 2005, I’ve been a sales staff member responsible for the management of orders and shipping.

Although I feel that it is difficult to meet the wide variety of requests from customers in a wide variety of regions, such as the U.S., Japan, and Europe, I regard this as a good opportunity to expand our business all over the world, and continue doing my best.

Oregonians Enjoying Summer Weekends

Oregon State is sandwiched between Washington State, where Seattle is located, in the north and California in the south. Portland has almost the same latitude as Wakkanai City, Hokkaido. In Oregon, while the rainy season is in winter, when the days are short, summers are dry, and the days are long (sunset comes a little after 9:00 p.m.), and the climate is comfortable. An almost one-hour drive takes you to some great natural locations, such as Mount Hood at a height of 3,424 m above sea level; the magnificent scenery of the gorge of the Columbia River, one of the longest rivers in western U.S.; the Oregon coast, commanding a view of the Pacific Ocean; and the Multnomah Falls with a height of 189 m, the second highest in the U.S. With Oregon blessed with such natural beauty, many people enjoy BBQs, cycling, playing golf, and other outdoor activities on the weekend.

In addition, farmers’ markets are held every weekend in various places. At such markets, you can buy berries, which are well-known as a local specialty, and other fruits, as well as fresh vegetables. You can also easily enjoy berry-picking on suburban farms. I actually went berry-picking with my family. The taste was great and we were able to enjoy an Oregon-style summer weekend.

Downtown in Portland

Portland, High-Tech Industrial City

Portland is home to approximately 1.7 million people. The suburbs of Portland have flourished as a port near the Columbia River in the U.S. west coast area. Having a long historical relationship with Japan, the city is renowned as an export base to Japan for agricultural products such as wheat and hay.

Moreover, the city is home to many industries. As you may know, NIKE, Columbia Sports, and some other major companies are headquartered in the city. Near SESMI are Intel and many other semiconductor-related companies, including Japanese-affiliated ones. Called the Silicon Forest, Portland is a vigorous high-tech industrial city.
