Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. co-sponsored the "Dreams for Tomorrow -- A Contest for ES to HS students to Envision the Future," which was held as a commemorative event for the 80th anniversary of Osaka University. This contest was planned and organized by Osaka University to reverse the trend of declining interest in science among children. The event organizer invited entries from elementary and junior high school students to submit pictures and essays forecasting what society will be like 20 years from now. The award ceremony for outstanding works was held on July 21 at the Toyonaka Campus of Osaka University.
A total of seven companies, including Sumitomo Electric, co-sponsored the contest, providing cooperation in selecting prizewinners and offering extra prizes regarding the theme assigned to each co-sponsoring company.
As for our Company's theme "School in the Future" 46 entries were made from first to fifth graders of elementary school. As a result, Satoya Ichikawa, a second grader in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, was selected as the winner of the Sumitomo Electric Award. His work is a dynamic and joyful one that depicted a school full of greenery to be achieved in the future by resolving various challenges of present-day society, such as harmonious coexistence with nature and energy conservation.
