Laser Industry Award for Excellence from Laser Society of Japan

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.'s F-Theta lens*1 for CO2 laser drilling process received the third Laser Industry Award for Excellence granted by the Laser Society of Japan.

The Society issues laser industry awards for excellence, encouragement and contribution as accolades for excellent new products and technologies, developed and commercialized by businesses in the laser and other optics-related industries, that contribute to social evolution.

Some optical elements for infrared lasers, primarily CO2 lasers (wavelength range from 9.3 to 10.6 μm) are made from ZnSe*2. ZnSe is a material commercialized by only three companies in the world, including Sumitomo Electric, with established manufacturing technologies. The award-winning F-Theta lens for CO2 laser drilling process was commercialized by combining the material's superiority with our proprietary design and manufacturing technologies.

Currently making optimum use of design and manufacturing technologies we have developed through the production of optical elements for infrared lasers, we have developed F-Theta lenses incorporating synthetic quartz for Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (YAG) lasers and other shorter wavelength lasers.

Sumitomo Electric will provide customers with useful products in various fields.

Note:

*1 F-Theta lens:
TThe F-Theta lens focuses laser beams. F-Theta lenses are used for high-speed drilling on printed wiring boards and fast marking on electronic devices and plastic parts.

*2 ZnSe:
Zinc selenide, a chemical substance composed of zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se).
