Affiliated Company of the Month: Sumitomo Electric Tochigi Co., Ltd.

Sumitomo Electric Tochigi Co., Ltd. was established in July 1984 as an affiliated company that handles part of Sumitomo Electric Group's special steel wires and related product business. Sumitomo Electric Tochigi has since developed its operation, flexibly responding to the ever-changing business environment by effectively utilizing the company's original and innovative manufacturing technologies. Two years ago the company celebrated the 25th anniversary of its establishment. With that milestone as a new start, the company renewed its resolution to become one of the world's most powerful industrial sites, realizing the world's highest quality and cost effectiveness.

Providing technologies of ever higher standard

 Saw wires

We mainly manufacture steel tire cords (high-carbon steel wires used to reinforce radial tires), spring wires for precision components, and saw wires used for cutting a silicon ingot into thin wafers.

In regard to steel tire cords, our principal products since the company's founding, we have steadily expanded business on the strength of our creative manufacturing system and high productivity, which rank at the world's top level. Achievements resulting from our dynamic and technically superior activities, aimed at production technology innovation, have been officially recognized by Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., winning the President's Award, the Glorious Excellent Award and many other commendations. Indeed, our technological expertise is highly acclaimed within the Sumitomo Electric Group.

As mentioned above, saw wires are used to slice ingots of silicon, the raw material of solar cells and semiconductors, into thin wafers. As the use of solar cells continues to grow to meet the increasing demand for clean energy sources, we view our saw wires as a key line of products whose market is expanding worldwide. Accordingly, we intend to further develop the saw wire business with our unique production expertise.

Workplace Atmosphere

We are a young company, whose average employee age is 34. Perhaps because of this trait, we cherish interpersonal ties, both hierarchical and horizontal, very much. We all try to maintain an open environment that encourages frank and frequent communication. For example, the President and Directors themselves participate in a range of group activities and improvement programs relating to safety, quality and cost-related themes, maintaining active communication with younger personnel. We are also active in local community events. Our soccer and baseball teams won in recent tournaments held among the companies located in the same industrial park. We intend to remain an energetic company with a friendly atmosphere.

Future Development

Last year we launched a major project with the Special Steel Wire Division of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., to begin overseas production of steel tire cords and saw wires. Since the largest markets for the two products are now in East Asia, centering on China, a local production base in this region is becoming essential for remaining competitive in the world market. In the near future, the unique and high-performance manufacturing and product technologies we have nurtured and accumulated here in Tochigi over many years will be deployed in overseas factories. As their mother factory, we feel quite excited about the great task of assisting their future success.
