Affiliated Company of the Month: A.L.M.T. Corp.

A.L.M.T. Corp. was formed in 2000 as a result of merger between Tokyo Tungsten Co., Ltd. and Osaka Diamond Industries Co., Ltd. In 2003, the functional parts business was transferred from Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd, and A.L.M.T. Corporation became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric in the following year. The Company manufactures and sells various products that feature refractory metals and ultra-precision machining to support the Industrial Materials Business Unit.

Functional materials and products and Diamond/CBN products business

To respond to various customer needs, the Company set up manufacturing firms for its four principal business groups. A.L.M.T. Corp. exercises overall control of the manufacturing firms. The Company’s principal businesses are grouped into two categories: functional materials and products using refractory metals such as tungsten and molybdenum (A.L.M.T. Tungsten Corp. and A.L.M.T. Tech Inc.) and diamond /CBN products made from natural or synthetic diamonds (A.L.M.T. Diamond Corp. and Awaji Diamond Industrial Co., Ltd.).

In the Functional Materials & Products Division, we produce inverters used in hybrid electric vehicles, heat sink materials incorporated in mobile phone base station amplifiers, molybdenum as liquid crystal electrode materials, and tungsten powder used for electrical contacts, "Heavy Metal" products, cemented carbide alloys and electronic components.

Representatives of the Diamond/CBN Tools Division are precision diamond tools, which are used for machining in semiconductor and electronics applications requiring nanometer order precision, and for working on high-strength automotive parts. Other important products of the diamond products category include blades used in urban development, and wire drawing dies. Of particular note are diamond precision wire saws (PWSs). Diamond abrasives bonded to the surface of core wire improve efficiency in cutting ingots such as of LED sapphire.

Workplace atmosphere

The customary annual event held by the Head Office in early summer is the bowling competition, in which the President and many employees participate. Since high-scoring players win luxury prizes, everybody, in an intimate atmosphere, becomes serious about their games. When the competition ends, results are announced and the prize award ceremony is held. At a subsequent get-together, participants toast others’ performance. The event provides a significant opportunity for employees to enjoy cross-departmental exchange, of which there is little during everyday work. Similarly enjoyable events are also held at branch offices on a regular basis.

Future developments

The principal materials used for high-functionality materials business are tungsten and molybdenum. It is difficult to ensure stable supplies of these rare metals. A.L.M.T. Corp. works on diversifying sources of supply. Furthermore, as part of a national project, the Company is vigorously undertaking a tungsten recycling project jointly with the Electronics and Materials R&D Laboratories and the Hardmetal Division. The Company is also making efforts to develop products for semiconductor and solar cell applications, in addition to conventional automotive and bearing industries, to stay abreast of the current paradigm shift.
