[Newsletter "SEI NEWS" Vol.400]

Affiliated Companies of the Month: Sumitomo (SEI) Electronic Wire, Inc. / Sumitomo Electric Flat Components, Inc.

Sumitomo (SEI) Electronic Wire, Inc. (SEIW) and Sumitomo Electric Flat Components, Inc. (SEFT) have been manufacturing and selling mainly wiring materials used in electronics equipment and automobiles since June 1971, when the two companies’ forerunner, Sumitomo Electric’s Electronic Wire Division, was established at the two companies’ present location overlooking the Nikko Mountains in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, as Kanto Works.

Products used in most advanced future-generation electronics

SEIW manufactures electronic wires used for internal wiring of household electric appliances, such as TV sets and air conditioners, and automobiles; and data transmission cables and harnesses used internally and externally in cell phones, personal computers, medical equipment, automobiles and so forth.

SEFT mainly manufactures the flat cable "SUMI-CARD," on which several conductors are arranged and laminated, and the "Tab-Lead," lead wire used for lithium ion batteries.

Both companies have expanded their operations overseas in line with such business environment changes as the relocation of their customers’ manufacturing bases and market expansion in newly emerging countries. Currently they have 11 overseas affiliated companies in the United States, Germany, Hungary, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Workplace atmosphere

Our workplace atmosphere is always busy and lively, since our trade customers are in electronics and automobiles-- that is, sectors subject to particularly intense changes. We also have active exchanges with our overseas bases, with the number of overseas trainees received in Japan (in SEIW and SEFT) increasing. In the current business year, about 50 individuals came to Japan for a two-month practical exercise and training program, so it is not unusual to hear languages other than Japanese in our workplace. We enjoy close ties with our overseas bases, with whom we pursue improvement in manufacturing and share useful information.

Future developments

The environment surrounding electronics is changing more drastically than ever before. In such a situation, to achieve the goals set forth in Sumitomo Electric Group's VISION 2012, we intend to focus our efforts on expanding the supply of various products using our original technologies in the battery and high-speed transmission segments, in which much future growth is expected. Together with our sales and research divisions and overseas bases, we are working as one to make full use of our all-around capabilities and better satisfy customer needs.
