Attendance at Our Scholarship Awarding Ceremony in China

Hello! I'm Akihito Ikeda of the secretariat of the SEI Group CSR Foundation.

Soochow University

Soochow University

First, let me explain the aims of our foundation.
The SEI Group CSR Foundation was established in 2009 for the purpose of realizing a social contribution appropriate for the Sumitomo Electric Group. This was based on the Sumitomo Electric Group Basic Policies on Social Contributions, which had been formulated to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the establishment of Sumitomo Electric. Our foundation has been certified as a public service corporation.
The foundation is mainly engaged in the following three activities: "monetary contributions to university courses" and "support for academic and research activities," both of which aim to provide support for academic and research efforts, and "granting scholarships" to support students studying in Japan and abroad.

For granting scholarships, we provide financial support to students studying in Japan, as well as students in China, Thailand, and Vietnam.

In December last year, I visited China and attended our scholarship awarding ceremony together with staff members from Sumitomo Electric Management (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives from Soochow University and Shanghai International Studies University, as well as Wuhan University of Technology, whose students have been selected as new scholarship recipients.

After delivering an address at the venue university with faculty members in attendance, I presented each of the scholarship recipients with a certificate of eligibility. Although the ceremony was held in a solemn atmosphere, many questions were asked by students in the Q&A session. I was surprised to find that they were very interested in the Sumitomo Electric Group.
In addition, I was very pleased to receive much appreciation for our scholarship program from students, with whom I seldom have opportunities to meet directly.

I truly look forward to seeing these scholarship recipients making an excellent contribution to society in the future.

Ceremony to Provide Monetary Contributions to University Courses and Financial Support for Academic and Research Activities

Hello, everyone. I am Kawasaki of the secretariat of the SEI Group CSR Foundation.

In April 2009, the SEI Group CSR Foundation was established with the purpose of contributing toward the development of human resources and the promotion of academic activities in various fields both in Japan and overseas. In February 2010, the foundation was certified as a public interest incorporated foundation.

As introduced in this blog last year, one of our main activities is to provide monetary contributions to university courses and financial support for academic and research activities. On Tuesday, March 3, we held a ceremony to provide monetary contributions to university courses and financial support for academic and research activities. The event was attended by 12 university course instructors, and 14 academic and research instructors.

These university courses and academic and research activities have been selected from among many applicants after rigorous examination. We truly look forward to their future research results.

At the ceremony, instructors from university courses selected as new recipients of our monetary contributions explained their courses. In addition, instructors from university courses that had received our donations in the past reported the research results that they had achieved so far. We were very pleased to hear them say that our support was truly useful for their research.

We would be very happy if our activities turn out to be helpful, if only a little, for research that will contribute to the future development of society.

SEI Group CSR Foundation Holds Party for Scholarship Students

Hello! I’m Ikeda of the secretariat of the SEI Group CSR Foundation(*).

The SEI Group CSR Foundation provides scholarships for international students studying in Japan. In FY 2012, we granted scholarships to 16 students. The other day, inviting four such scholarship students who recently completed their masters programs at the end of March, we held a party to celebrate their two years of hard work and asked them about their research results and future aspirations.

All four are students in science-related majors. What impressed us most was that, although they came from China or Taiwan, they spoke Japanese fluently and explained their research activities passionately. Prior to the party, we showed them around Sumitomo Yuho-en garden in Kyoto, although it was a little bit early to enjoy cherry blossoms. At the party, they also said that they were moved by the beauty of the garden.

Although the four students all had made different career choices, we would be very happy if they utilize what they have learned in Japan and contribute to society.

FY2011 Scholarship Award Ceremony at Soochow University, China

Hello! My name is Yan, I work for Sumitomo Electric Management (Shanghai)Co.,Ltd. (SMS)

Currently in its fourth year, the scholarship program at Soochow University is part of the activities of the SEI Group CSR Foundation(※). The scholarship award ceremony for fiscal 2011 took place on December 16, 2011 at Soochow University.

This program, one of the scholarship programs offered by Sumitomo Electric Group CSR Foundation in Japan and abroad to develop human resources in accordance with its basic policies on social contributions, provides scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in science and technology fields. Suzhou City and its environs host eight of Sumitomo Electric Group companies, including those specializing in electronics, information & communications, systems, and automotive businesses. The scholarship program was begun in 2008 to contribute back to the local community and to cultivate human resources.

At the award ceremony, Mr. Tonai, CEO of Sumitomo Electric Photo-Electronics Components (Suzhou), Ltd. offered words of congratulations and encouragement to 19 scholarship winners who are either in their second or third year at Soochow University. A representative of the scholarship students returned words of thanks and delivered a presentation about future study plans. There was also a presentation outlining the Sumitomo Electric Group, followed by time for questions and answers, which I believe provided the students a chance to better understand the Group’s corporate ethos, global human resource management (HRM) policies, and corporate culture.

This was the second time I attended the award ceremony. As last year, I was impressed by how distinguished the scholarship students were, and was happy that the ceremony was very successful. This year I had the opportunity to talk to students about my tasks and responsibilities at work. Deciding on what to include in my speech was not easy. At the same time, I was very excited as a member of the Sumitomo Electric Group about the chance to promote the Company, and made my presentation so students would become familiar about Sumitomo Electric through accounts of my day-to-day work. After the award ceremony I was very grateful to hear from faculty members and students that the approachable presentation brought the Sumitomo Electric Group closer to the students.

I very much look forward to meeting outstanding and highly motivated students next year as well.
