Attendance at Our Scholarship Awarding Ceremony in China

Hello! I'm Akihito Ikeda of the secretariat of the SEI Group CSR Foundation.

Soochow University

Soochow University

First, let me explain the aims of our foundation.
The SEI Group CSR Foundation was established in 2009 for the purpose of realizing a social contribution appropriate for the Sumitomo Electric Group. This was based on the Sumitomo Electric Group Basic Policies on Social Contributions, which had been formulated to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the establishment of Sumitomo Electric. Our foundation has been certified as a public service corporation.
The foundation is mainly engaged in the following three activities: "monetary contributions to university courses" and "support for academic and research activities," both of which aim to provide support for academic and research efforts, and "granting scholarships" to support students studying in Japan and abroad.

For granting scholarships, we provide financial support to students studying in Japan, as well as students in China, Thailand, and Vietnam.

In December last year, I visited China and attended our scholarship awarding ceremony together with staff members from Sumitomo Electric Management (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives from Soochow University and Shanghai International Studies University, as well as Wuhan University of Technology, whose students have been selected as new scholarship recipients.

After delivering an address at the venue university with faculty members in attendance, I presented each of the scholarship recipients with a certificate of eligibility. Although the ceremony was held in a solemn atmosphere, many questions were asked by students in the Q&A session. I was surprised to find that they were very interested in the Sumitomo Electric Group.
In addition, I was very pleased to receive much appreciation for our scholarship program from students, with whom I seldom have opportunities to meet directly.

I truly look forward to seeing these scholarship recipients making an excellent contribution to society in the future.

FY2011 Scholarship Award Ceremony at Soochow University, China

Hello! My name is Yan, I work for Sumitomo Electric Management (Shanghai)Co.,Ltd. (SMS)

Currently in its fourth year, the scholarship program at Soochow University is part of the activities of the SEI Group CSR Foundation(※). The scholarship award ceremony for fiscal 2011 took place on December 16, 2011 at Soochow University.

This program, one of the scholarship programs offered by Sumitomo Electric Group CSR Foundation in Japan and abroad to develop human resources in accordance with its basic policies on social contributions, provides scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in science and technology fields. Suzhou City and its environs host eight of Sumitomo Electric Group companies, including those specializing in electronics, information & communications, systems, and automotive businesses. The scholarship program was begun in 2008 to contribute back to the local community and to cultivate human resources.

At the award ceremony, Mr. Tonai, CEO of Sumitomo Electric Photo-Electronics Components (Suzhou), Ltd. offered words of congratulations and encouragement to 19 scholarship winners who are either in their second or third year at Soochow University. A representative of the scholarship students returned words of thanks and delivered a presentation about future study plans. There was also a presentation outlining the Sumitomo Electric Group, followed by time for questions and answers, which I believe provided the students a chance to better understand the Group’s corporate ethos, global human resource management (HRM) policies, and corporate culture.

This was the second time I attended the award ceremony. As last year, I was impressed by how distinguished the scholarship students were, and was happy that the ceremony was very successful. This year I had the opportunity to talk to students about my tasks and responsibilities at work. Deciding on what to include in my speech was not easy. At the same time, I was very excited as a member of the Sumitomo Electric Group about the chance to promote the Company, and made my presentation so students would become familiar about Sumitomo Electric through accounts of my day-to-day work. After the award ceremony I was very grateful to hear from faculty members and students that the approachable presentation brought the Sumitomo Electric Group closer to the students.

I very much look forward to meeting outstanding and highly motivated students next year as well.

Presents from Children

Hello, readers! I am Wenxin Liu, from the HR & General Affairs Department, Zhongshan Sumiden Hybrid Products Co., Ltd. (ZSH).

ZSH is located in Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, China, to the southwest of the Pearl River Delta, and approximately 85 kilometers southwest of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province. Zhongshan is known for Quanyan hot springs and the Guzhen lighting fair, among others. It is also not far from Hong Kong and Macau, and is a beautiful city surrounded by green.

Although “Zhongshan” is used for road names around China, Zhongshan City here is the very hometown of Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan), the “Father of the Revolution,” who is also known as Sun When. Did you know that?

About twenty years ago, Zhongshan was mainly an agricultural city, producing commercial crops that were shipped to Hong Kong. Based on its geographical location with the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) flowing along the east side of the city, and with a boost from reform and liberalization policies, the Zhongshan Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone was established as a first-phase national high-tech industry development zone by the State Council in March 1991. It has now become a large industrial area housing business sites of high-tech industries, bio-tech industries, and others. ZSH was established in this development zone in August 1995.

In this report, I would like to introduce some of our philanthropic activities. ZSH has been engaged in various philanthropic activities every year, as a part of the trade union’s initiatives. Our trade union was evaluated highly by the Zhongshan Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone in 2009 and 2010.

Last year, we paid a courtesy visit to the old people’s home in Zhongshan Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone on Respect-for-the-Aged Day. This year, 14 union members visited the Zhongshan Home for Orphans on Children’s Day, and held an exchange with the children.

At present, more than 400 children from infants to high school students live in the Zhongshan Home for Orphans. Because we visited the Home in the afternoon on a weekday, older children were away at school, but 45 kindergarteners and infants were there to welcome us.

They were very happy for the clothes, milk, stationery, comic books, toys, and more that we purchased in advance and brought as souvenirs for them. In return, the children danced and sang for us.

Just like we felt at our courtesy visit to the nursing home last year, we felt like we were given more cheers than we presented. We can’t post photos with the children here, but they all showed us cute and cheerful smiles, which were the most wonderful gift for us☆

We would like to continue delivering smiles to as many people as possible through such activities.
