Toys for tots

Each year The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program distributes approximately 16 to 19 million toys to more than 7 million children. The mission is to collect new, unwrapped toys and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community.

The program was founded in 1947 and in 1948 it expanded into a nationwide program. In 1959 Toys for Tots went international following the typhoon that devastated the city of Nagoya, Japan. There have been two other international occasions, one in the Republic of Panama and the other in the Caribbean.

Toys for Tots is well-known in the United States. Even Walt Disney had a part in its development as Walt Disney designed the now famous Toys for Tots train logo in 1948.

Sumitomo Electric Interconnect Products, Inc. (SEIP) started participating in 2002 and has done so each year since for a total of 12 years. A collection box is placed in the SEIP lobby around late November. Toys are collected and picked up by local Marines in December. If the Marines are low on resources an SEIP employee will assist by delivering the toys to the closest drop site or the San Diego County distribution center located in Mira Mesa.

This is a great way for SEIP to support the community. Many of SEIP’s visitors take notice and give SEIP compliments for being involved in such a worthy cause. A few times return visitors have even brought a toy! SEIP’s ability to coordinate such an activity each year personifies the kindhearted nature of SEIP’s employees. The employees enjoy donating each year and look forward to many more years of being a contributor.
