November 27, 2015,10:45 +0900(JST) Kansai Regional Corporate Ekiden

On November 15, the 58th Ekiden (long-distance running relay) for Business Corporations in the Kansai Region was held in Ryujin, in Tanabe City, Wakayama. Our athletics club took 4th place and qualified for the All-Japan Men's Corporate Team Ekiden Championships (the New Year Ekiden) to be held on January 1 next year. The team will compete in the Championships for the third consecutive year. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to you all for supporting our team.

Looking back our team results in the past two years in the Ekiden in Ryujin, they finished in the 4th place in 2013 and 2nd place in 2014. Thus, I would be lying if I said that I had not built up certain expectations--This year they can possibly ...? Although I encouraged the team members to aim for the victory before the race, the things didn't go so easy as I had expected. Chance plays a part in every game.

As for the New Year Ekiden, the team finished the race in the 25th place in the past two years. I wish the team members get themselves into good physical and mental condition so that the team could mark the best record in time and rank this time.

November 12, 2015,08:55 +0900(JST) My motto is being displayed at an event

I was asked by Osaka Securities Exchange, Inc. (OSE) of JPX to write my motto.

This request was for an exhibition now being held at OSE in Kitahama, Osaka. At the exhibition you can see messages sent from managements in Kansai area for young people who are interested in starting a business and managements who aim to list their stocks. May an increasing number of corporate managers and entrepreneurs expand overseas from Kansai--I hear that in this event such a wish is contained by the organizer.

With spirit, what I wrote on a message cardboard with a Chinese ink brush, which I am inexperienced in the use of, is "Banji-nissei"--Doing your sincere best as one person in not only business but also every aspect of your life. That is one of the Sumitomo Group's spiritual foundation, or the Sumitomo Spirit and is what I frequently speak about to the employees.

The event (right) is held from October 20, at OSE Gallery on the 5th floor of OSE (left).

November 6, 2015,16:25 +0900(JST) Boost In-House Diversity

"Globalization is closely linked to diversity. Let's promote diversity of personnel." Although I am always telling so to the employees, it is not easy to get them to understand the necessity of diversity because they have worked in an environment with less diversity of human resources. Therefore, we decided to make an enlightening video for internal use, and I told my experience and thoughts.

It is said that an organization with less diversity tends to be homogenous minded, and it has difficulty in producing creative ideas and is weak to change. If a person works for a company that operates worldwide and that company wants its products to be used all over the world, that person needs to work with various people, and they have to recognize, respect and accept different values each other. Furthermore, they should integrate these different values at a level higher enough to feel comfortable to work with a variety of people.

The video will be distributed through the corporate intranet from next January. The interviewer conducted the interview smoothly, so I think that I could comfortably finish the interview session. How will it be edited? I'm looking forward to seeing the result.

November 5, 2015,16:25 +0900(JST) What will the car look like in the future?

The Tokyo Motor Show 2015 has started at the end of last month. The exhibition is held once every two years and every time I try to visit it as long as my schedule permits.

When I arrived at the exhibition hall, I went to our company's booth in the first place. Under the concept of "Link to the NEXT," we present our wide variety of technologies, using video image and displaying a demonstration car so that you can understand at a glance how our wire harnesses and other automotive products make up an automobile. It would be grateful if you could drop in Tokyo Big Sight to visit our booth although the final day of the show is coming.

After checking our booth, I went around in the wide exhibition site. It was the time before for public viewing and I was able to carefully listen to the explanations given by developers at other companies' booths. Learning struggles of the developers, I pondered a good deal of things--"What technical level have their products reached?

The Tokyo Motor Show always excites the visitors. It gathers electric cars and fuel cell electric vehicles, which are becoming mainstream of the time, as well as concept cars designed for automatic drive that seem to show up in a science fiction movie without the need for modification. Seeing them, I wondered, "Will it be like that in the future?" Besides, each manufacturer incorporated its characteristics into its new model car. It was interesting.

One of my favorite things in walking around in the venue is the encounter with our customers or acquaintances. On that day a friend called me and said, "I read your message in the company newsletter every time." I was ashamed of myself.

November 2, 2015,17:05 +0900(JST) Business Results for the First Half of Fiscal 2015

On October 29, we announced our group's consolidated business results for the first half of FY 2015.

Sales, operating income, ordinary income increased respectively from the same period last year, but we narrowly missed the target figure that we had previously announced. (In addition, net income of the second quarter attributable to the owners of the company decreased from the same period last year. This is mainly due to the significantly increased net income generated by the sale of our stocks of Sumitomo 3M last fiscal year.)

These days, the press reports economy with a gloomy tone. As is shown with its GDP growth rate of under 7% from this July to September, the economy of China continues to slow down although it has been described as an engine of the world economy. In Japan, expectations on Abenomics (Prime Minister Abe Shinzo's economic policies) are withering, and an expression "Economy Stagnates" is increasing to appear in newspaper headlines. Speaking of the raising of interest-rate by FRB, for which the press always write up a possible execution time, if it is once implemented, it will have a good deal of influence on the world economy, mainly in emerging economies.

In the second half of FY 2015, the economic climate may be severer than now. However, the principal of business is "Consider your income before spending" as the proverb says. I intend to make the employees thoroughly and honestly reconfirm the SEQCDD* to enable the company to become more solid and robust enough to ensure that no unexpected expenses are generated, as well as carefully prepare a plan and steadily put it into practice in order to achieve the set goals.
