Application Example 3: Reducing the Load on a Biological Treatment System

Background

An aluminum die-casting plant changed its production methods and product types. The change resulted in an increase in the oil contained in the die cleaning wastewater. If nothing were done to address this problem, the oil contained in the wastewater discharged daily would degrade the capacity of the activated sludge in the existing biological treatment system. As a result, untreated organic and oil components could be discharged, possibly failing to meet the requirements of the relevant water quality regulations.

Objective

To introduce a new wastewater treatment system in order to cope with variations in the amount of oil contained in wastewater and reduce the load on the biological treatment system.

Challenges

- Application in the limited space available
- System that requires only simple operational management
- Future expansion of capabilities to wastewater recycling

Results

The footprint has been reduced by half compared with the conventional floatation equipment. The several hundred mg/L of oil contained in the wastewater has been lowered to below the standard for effluent, using far smaller quantities of chemicals such as coagulants and coagulant aids than used in the previous process. This meets all the challenges presented initially.
