As a final qualifying event for major championships such as the Olympic Games and World Championships in Athletics, the race is attended by many front runners from Japan and overseas. First held in 1946, it is Japan’s oldest annual marathon race and the first one in the country’s history to be qualified as the prestigious Gold Label Road Race by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The course that starts at the Ojiyama Athletic Stadium, turns at the Shin-Seta Water Purification Plant and then goes back to the stadium is known for its historic scenery characterized by Hamaotsu town, Zezejo Castle Park and Ishiyama-dera Temple.
