President’s Welcome Message to New Recruits (summary)

April 2, 2012
Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.
Masayoshi Matsumoto, President & CEO

Congratulations on your employment, and my warm welcome to Sumitomo Electric on behalf of the entire Group.
Last year, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami caused the loss of so many precious lives. Once again, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to those people.

This is the final year of the VISION 2012, Sumitomo Electric Group’s mid-term business plan. It is, therefore, time for us to finalize our activities and prepare for the next management targets. In my new year’s greeting message, I asked our people to keep the three items in their mind: “Start the final spurt towards the goals of VISION 2012,” “improve your ability to deal with change,” and “believe in your dreams and stay cheerful, energetic, and happy.” To the new Sumitomo Electric employees, I would also like to make the following two requests as a way of expressing my expectations and encouragement.

 1. Master the basics of your work, and do your work conscientiously
In pursuing clerical routines and daily duties, I would like you to be fully aware of basic rules and working procedures, let alone to comply with laws, regulations and social norms. I expect you to play your role with faith and strong determination to prevent accidents, complaints and compliance-related issues. For these purposes, I would like to encourage you to develop and improve yourselves making good use of the SEI University and other training facilities.
 2. Take great care of your communication with others
The Sumitomo Electric Group has grown to be a large business group, consisting of about 300 companies with more than 200,000 employees, but the Group is supported by the efforts in individual workplaces. Therefore, I would like you to actively interact with the people around you, including your superiors and colleagues, to create an open and supportive working environment where all employees work vigorously and intensively while these individuals’ abilities and efforts are oriented in the same direction toward common goals as a team.

In closing, I would like to extend my best wishes for your health and success in your working life.
