Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has developed a new CBN grade “SUMIBORON BN2000” for general hardened steel cutting purposes. “SUMIBORON BN2000” will be introduced to the market on April 20 this year. |
|
Cubic boron nitride (CBN) is the second hardest material after diamond. CBN powder and a binder are treated under high-temperature and high-pressure to yield sintered CBN, which is known as a cutting tool material for high-speed machining of hard-to-cut ferrous metals, such as automotive hardened steels and cast irons. Sintered CBN is used in an increasingly wide range of applications.
Sumitomo Electric provides its original sintered CBN grades under two brand names. “Coated SUMIBORON,” covered with a highly wear-resistant ceramic film, is suited to fast machining and mass production. “SUMIBORON,” without a ceramic film coating, hence of low initial cost, is appropriate for low-volume production.
In the area of hardened steel cutting, we have been offering optimal “SUMIBORON” products for specific purposes such as fast and continuous cutting, high-efficiency cutting, interrupted cutting and high-precision cutting. Additionally, we will launch a principal grade “SUMIBORON BN 2000,” which can be used universally for a number of the above-mentioned machining purposes.
Features of this product: |

|
|
(1) |
Substantial improvement in tool performance, thanks to use of high-purity ceramic binder
The purity of the ceramic binder in sintered CBN has been enhanced, yielding substantial improvement in heat resistance. The tool material is now less prone to degradation by high heat during cutting. Cutting edge wear and chipping caused by progressive wear in areas near the cutting edge have been successfully reduced.
“SUMIBORON BN2000” offers an unprecedentedly high level of wear and chipping resistance. Its useful life in finish cutting of hardened steels is 30% to 100% longer than our conventional products.
|
(2) |
Versatility spanning all types of hardened steel machining
Sintered CBN’s chemical composition has been optimized to achieve balance between wear resistance and chipping resistance. “SUMIBORON BN2000” performs stably in a wide range of applications, from continuous cutting to light interrupted cutting and medium interrupted cutting.

Wide assortment of items
Compared with its predecessor “SUMIBORON BN250,” the BN2000 lineup is significantly extensive, including LT-type specifically for sharpness and HS-type with a tough cutting edge. In addition, items differing in nose radius have been added. Eighty-eight items have been added to the existing stock, a 50% increase from the previous lineup, for immediate delivery. These products will precisely meet a wider range of cutting requirements.
