Development and Release of New Coated Carbide Grade “ACECOAT AC830P” for Steel Turning

June 26, 2008
Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Corporation

Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Corporation (President: Yoshihiro Minato; Head office: 1-1-1 Koyakita, Itami, HyogoPrefecture) has developed a new CVD-coated carbide grade “ACECOAT AC830P.” In recent years, demand for tools has been strong. Among others, an exceptionally large market exists for tools used in steel turning applications. The “ACECOAT AC830P” has a stable and long tool life-- more than twice that of the conventional one. The product will be on the market in July.

ACECOAT AC830P

In the automotive industry and other fields of mechanical parts machining, demand is growing each year for long-life and high-efficiency cutting tools to shorten delivery time and reduce machining cost. In addition to these demands, clients desire reliable tools that are free from accidental troubles.

To fulfill these demands, Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal has developed “ACECOAT AC830P”, which has a stable long service life in interrupted or heavy-duty cutting and turning, as well as in general-purpose turning of steels.

Features of this product:

(1)

“SUPER FF COAT”

The Company’s original chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coating “SUPER FF COAT” is a smooth, multilayer thin film structure comprised of titanium carbonitride film and aluminum oxide film. “SUPER FF COAT” has substantially higher resistance to adhesion and wear than conventional coatings, thus making the AC830P highly resistant against wear and detachment.

(2)

Newly developed internal stress control technology for coating films

The newly developed internal stress control technology reduces residual tensile stresses inherent to CVD coatings, the chipping resistance being twice or more that of conventional grades. This technology doubles (or more) tool life and improves machining efficiency by 1.5 times or more, compared with the Company’s conventional grades.

Although priced the same as the Company’s conventional products, “ACECOAT AC830P” is expected to substantially reduce machining costs, since its long service life reduces tool consumption and tool change frequency, while its high efficiency shortens machining time.
