The SFP+ is the next-generation transceiver package for 10 Gb/s Ethernet and Fibre Channel applications, offering a more compact form factor than currently offered by the X2 and XFP packages and low power consumption of less than 1 watt. By removing the clock and data recovery (CDR) and electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) functions from the transceiver, the new SFP+ achieves the same size as the industry-standard SFP form factor now used for data rates up to 4 Gb/s. The SFP+ offers higher mounting densities than current 10G devices.
Sumitomo Electric Industries is initially releasing three transceivers in the SPP5000 series:
- SPP5101SR for 10GBASE-SR using an 850-nm VCSEL for operation over multimode fiber (MMF) at distances up to 300 m.
- SPP5101LM for 10GBASE-LRM using a 1310-nm Fabry-Perot laser for operation over multimode fiber (MMF) at distances up to 220 m.
- SPP5101LR for 10GBASE-LR using a 1310-nm DFB laser for operation over single-mode fiber (SMF) at distances up to 10 km.
The SPP5101LM will be demonstrated at the ExceLight/Sumitomo booth (#2340) =during OFC/NFOEC, March 25 - 28 in Anaheim, California.
Sumitomo Electric Industries / ExceLight is an active member of the SFF-8431 committee, which is responsible for standardizing the SFP+ transceivers. A final multi-source agreement (MSA) is expected in May 2007.
