President's New Year Message to Employees (summary)

January 4, 2007
Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.
Masayoshi Matsumoto, President & CEO

The world economy is expected to continue growing gradually in 2007. However, there is growing concern over the slowdown of the world economy especially that in the US. The Japanese economy also does not allow optimism, due to uncertainties such as sluggish personal consumption and a surge in raw material costs. Under these conditions, in 2007, the SEI Group will ensure accomplishment of the mid-term management plan "Vision 2007" and forge a solid foundation for its further growth.

This year, I would like everyone in the Group to accomplish the
following three points.

The first point is to strive for the absolute in business conduct.

Workplace safety, product quality and compliance with laws and regulations are the fundamental elements of business. I would like everyone to acquire knowledge of the Group's basic policies regarding these three fundamental elements and perform these policies sincerely and straightforwardly with the strong conviction that we will not be complacent with the current situation and that we will continue striving toward achieving the absolute. I would also like everyone to set goals and visions for their tasks and work toward accomplishing them so that the Group's goal of becoming a "Glorious Excellent Company" can be achieved.

The second point is to set a clear time line and end goal.

It is necessary that each of us continuously sets a clear goal, makes careful preparations to respond flexibly to the ever changing market and customer needs, and carries out tasks with a time line in mind. Especially regarding new product and technology development, we must have a great ambition of achieving number one position in the market and accelerate development and commercialization of high value-added products.

The third point is to work together in the same direction and improve strengths as a team.

For the SEI Group to sustain growth, everyone in the Group need to work on self-development and consolidate individual strengths as a single force. This does not mean a strictly hierarchical "top-down" model. It is cooperation within a team, in which each member uses one's own capability to fulfill the team's goal. All managers and supervisors are required to use their leadership skills in clarifying the direction the team is heading, facilitate communication within the team, and create a lively workplace atmosphere. I would like everyone to be conscious of improving team's strengths when conducting their tasks.

In April 2007, Sumitomo Electric will celebrate the 110th anniversary of its foundation. I would like everyone to make strenuous efforts toward achieving the Vision 2007 plan and make 2007 a memorable year that marks the beginning of the SEI Group's strategic growth.
