New Items Added to "ACE COAT AC630M" Grade for Stainless Steel Turning

November 8, 2006
Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Corp.

Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Corp. (President: Katsuhide Kurasaka, Head office: 1-1-1 Koyakita, Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture) has considerably expanded the lineup of the "ACE COAT AC630M" carbide grade for stainless steel turning that provides longer tool life and reduces machining costs. The new items were released to the market in October 2006.

ACE COAT AC630M

Stainless steels have low thermal conductivity and work harden easily, and therefore cause problems like high temperature at cutting edges and adhesion to tools during cutting operations.

The "ACE COAT AC630M" carbide grade was developed for stainless steel turning that have lower machinability than general steels and regarded as hard-to-machine materials. “SUPER FF COAT” coating has a hard microfine titanium compound coating that exhibits excellent adhesiveness to carbide substrates, and newly developed, a specially-smoothed hard alpha-alumina coating. It provides enhanced chipping resistance, and also effectively prevents adhesion of work materials to tools.

ACE COAT AC630M is applicable to not only stainless steels but also general steels, and since the first time it was released, it has been satisfying customer demands for longer tool life and higher machining efficiency that leads to lower machining costs.

To suit a wider range of customer needs, Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal has added new items to the ACE COAT AC630M lineup, covering the operation range from rough machining to finishing. Especially many of the items added are those for finishing operations (FL, LU, LUW and UP type chip breakers, and positive inserts), and provide improved sharpness, reliability and cutting performance.

In steel turning operations, ACE COAT AC630M has following features:

(1) Improved adhesion resistance
The specially-smoothed hard alpha-alumina coating ensures stable and long tool life in low-carbon steel machining and in cutting operations during which adhesion of work material to tool may occur due to slow cutting speed.
(2) Improved chipping resistance
The newly developed “SUPER FF COAT” coating increases chipping resistance. It ensures stable cutting performance and long tool life in light interrupted cutting, and reduces chipping and enhances surface quality in finishing operations.
(3) Improved cutting performance
By combining sharp cutting edge geometries with the chipping-resistant carbide grade developed for stainless steel turning, cutting performance can be increased also in turning of general steels, thus eliminating the formation of chatter marks in small-diameter or thin-thickness machining and burrs in low-carbon-steel machining.
