Overview

Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. was awarded the advanced traffic signal control system in Yangon, Myanmar, which was a pilot program of Comprehensive Urban Transport Plan of the Greater Yangon supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Results

EFFECTS

(1) Reduced total vehicle waiting time at the intersection by 26.4%.
(2) Economic benefit of 4.5 billion Kyat (approx. $4.4 million) a year.

- Initial Evaluation by using Traffic Simulator

(2) Traffic signal controller / Video vehicle detectors
- Balanced between "Automatic control" and "Manual control by police officer"
- Volume, presence, speed, type of vehicles and congestion length

(3) Signal Phase Plan Design / Gap Actuation Control
- Appropriate signal phase plan based on investigation of local traffic condition
- Variable length of each phase based on detected "gap of vehicles presence"
