Environmentally Conscious Products

“Eco Mind” Products・・・The first Step

We perform product assessment when developing new products, as well as when making major design changes to existing products. The products having undergone product assessment are registered as “Eco Mind” products and the registration results are published within the Group, with an aim to make our products more environmentally conscious.
By fiscal 2014, a total of 654 items were registered as“Eco Mind” products. In the Action ECO-21 (Phase V) campaign, we set the target of 100% of the registration ratio of new products.

Eco-products・・・The second Step

Among “Eco Mind” products, the products with particularly outstanding environmental features are examined in accordance with our Eco Symbol Program, which is based on ISO14021, and those that meet the criteria are certified as “Eco-products.” Through this program, we will promote development and market penetration of environmentally conscious products.
By fiscal 2014, a total of 213 products were certified as Eco-products. We are working to meet the target of increasing the sales ratio (sales of Eco-products / sales in the division) to 50% in the Action ECO-21 (Phase V) campaign.

Anti-Global Warming Products・・・The third Step

We have established a new program on “Anti-Global Warming Products.” In this
program, we register the Eco-products that especially contribute to the reduction of
CO₂ emissions from society, and calculate and disclose the reduction effect, in order
to contribute to the prevention of global warming.
In the Action ECO-21 (Phase V) campaign, we aim to achieve CO₂ contributed
reduction of 100 thousand tons per year.

Life Cycle Assessment

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the method of quantitatively assessing inputs (resources, energy etc.), outputs (substances of environmental concern etc.), and their associated impact on the natural environment, throughout the life cycle of a product/service, from related resource intake through manufacture, distribution, and use to disposal. Take greenhouse gas emissions as an example. Where and how much greenhouse gas is emitted can be assessed quantitatively at all through the life cycle of products, including mining of ore or oil , manufacturing of parts/products, transportation among processes, and use, disposal and recycling of the products. The method is the basis of Carbon Footprint of Product* (CFP) whose rapid expansion is expected in the future, and its importance is increasing more and more. The Sumitomo Electric Group is committed to reduction of environmental impact through the whole lifecycle of products, including the stages of use or disposal by customers, by making use of the LCA actively.

Carbon Footprint of Product(CFP)
A system to convert greenhouse gas emitted in the whole life cycle of a product/service into CO₂ and indicate the CO₂ emissions. Consumers can select a product/service with less environmental impact.

Biodiversity Conservation Activities

The 10th Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the Convention of Biological Diversity was held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture in October 2010, and raised awareness of biodiversity among Japanese people. Companies are also required to promote biodiversity conservation activities urgently.Sumitomo Electric Group aims to procure raw materials and design and manufacture products in a way that protects the ecosystem and maintains sustainable resource use. We also seek to contribute to the environment preservation on a global basis by providing high-performance products.
