Make This Year Filled with Hope

I wish you a Happy New Year!
I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to you all for your continued support.

In the Chinese astrology, 2016 is the year of hinoe-saru, also called hei-shin. One theory says that the Chinese characters for both hei and shin mean “to be clear,” “prosperous,” and “to develop,” suggesting that 2016 will be a year of growth and development. Looking at current global politics and economic situation, however, we see a wide variety of problems such as geopolitical risks arising in various places around the world, and economic downturn in China and emerging markets. In this situation, you might find it difficult to believe that 2016 will be a year of growth and development.

The current confusion in the world starting from the collapse of the Cold War structure is frequently compared to Pandora’s box in Greek mythology. After a wide variety of evils were released from the box into the world, there was only one thing left—called elpis. Although various theories exist of how elpis is interpreted, I believe that it is “hope.” Certainly, it is tough to take care of many problems and challenges, but we can create opportunities by striving to overcome these difficulties, and such opportunities will lead us to growth and development. I feel positive that 2016 will become such a hopeful year.

Of course, it is totally impossible to solve problems with a casual attitude. On the first business day of 2016, I told all the employees to ensure once again that their work is based on the Sumitomo Spirit, and to work on their daily duties sincerely. The essence of the Sumitomo Spirit lies in banji-nissei (do your sincere best, not only in business but also in every aspect of your life), fusu-furi (do not act rashly or carelessly in pursuit of easy gains), and shinyo-kakujitsu (place importance on integrity and sound management). When engaging in our daily work, all of us at the Sumitomo Electric Group need to continue bearing these tenets in mind. Together, we would like to find growth and development possibilities that are hidden somewhere.

We look forward to receiving your continued support and guidance this year again.
