Established in 2005 as a company mainly engaged in the development of wiring harnesses, SEWS-STC Co., Ltd. (Shanghai) (SEWS-STC) marked its 10th anniversary this year. In 2012, to accommodate the needs of automobile companies across China, which is growing and changing remarkably, the company changed its name and business to those of a trading company with primary focus on sales operations. Aiming to enhance the global presence of the Sumitomo Electric Group in the field of wiring harnesses, the company is pushing forward to reinforce its sales operations and create new customers in China.

Working Hard Every Day to Expand the Business through Mutual Trust and Cooperation with Staff in a Business Environment that is Becoming Increasingly More Severe Year after Year

In February 2012 I was transferred to the STC Guangzhou branch office. Demonstrating remarkable growth, the Chinese automobile market reached 23.5 million units last year. At the same time, the country’s economic environment is changing, requiring local harness business units to shift their focus to domestic demand. To accommodate customers’ needs without fail, thus realizing future development of the business, we have established a number of business bases in Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou. While ensuring cooperation with the various business units concerned, we aim to be quick to take advantage of sales opportunities.

When I was transferred to the Guangzhou branch office, where I work now, there were only three sales staff. After employing and training local staff members, the number has now grown to 17. In my section there has been a change from individual work to teamwork in responding to customers.

We experienced a wide variety of hardships including not only severe competition in the world’s largest market, but also difficulty in supplying components due to the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Thai flooding. However, we were able to overcome them. This experience made me aware of the importance of considering matters from the viewpoint of staff members, ensuring good communication with them, and entrusting tasks to them. Although the business environment is becoming increasingly severe year by year, I would like to continue working hard every day in cooperation with them, so that we can further expand our automobile business in China.

Ms. Wang Lan

Nínhăo! (Hello!) I am Wang Lan of the headquarters in Shanghai. I work as a sales representative to find potential customers.

It has been four years since I joined this company. Although there are many difficulties in entering a new field, I have overcome them together with my coworkers.

The words “integrity” and “trust” are often used at the Sumitomo Electric Group to explain its management philosophy, and I really like these words.

I believe that they are excellent principles accepted anywhere in the world. I would like to continue taking great pride in working as a member of this global group, and also in achieving my own growth.

Dă jiă hǎo! (Hello, everyone!) I am Jiang Ying of the Tianjin branch office of SEWS-STC. About two and a half years have passed since I joined this company. In the first year, I worked as a secretary and interpreter. Afterwards, I accumulated knowledge about estimates, and now I work as a sales representative.

Customers’ demand for cost reduction is becoming more and more severe. In this situation, while always trying to find issues that can be solved through local sales operations, I draw up estimates on various matters while giving consideration to maximizing our plant’s profit. Our office has wonderful teamwork, and I realize my own improvement in various skills every day.

In Guangzhou, while there are arrays of high-rise buildings in some areas, you can still feel the atmosphere of the old days in the old part of the city. When it comes to traffic congestion, which is a fact of life in big cities, Guangzhou is sometimes neck and neck with Tokyo, though a subway network has been built in Guangzhou as well. As suggested by “Eating in Guangzhou,” a renowned phrase from a Chinese saying, there is a wide variety of restaurants in the city that serve not only Guangzhou dishes and other types of Chinese cuisine, but also Japanese, Korean, Thai, Italian and African dishes.

Unique Dishes and Food (Alcohol?) Cultures of Guangzhou and Tianjin

Although yum cha (Chinese style morning or afternoon tea) has been established as part of the culture of the Guangdong region, innovation in the shapes of the items served as dim sum has been attracting wide attention for the past few years. The picture on the right shows a mantou (Chinese steamed bun) made in the shape of a teapot. Tea is one of the main elements of the food culture of the Guangdong region. Through these items you can get a feel for Guangdong culture.

In Tianjin, Goubuli’s baozi (steamed bun with meat) is renowned. Goubuli’s baozi is one the three most delicious dishes available in Tianjin. In Tianjin, there is also a store famous for roasted chestnuts. (Since such chestnuts were once exported from the port of Tianjin, in Japan even today they are still called “Tianjin sweet chestnuts.”) Incidentally, I might add that Tianjin rice (crab meat omelet on rice) was actually invented in Japan. Meanwhile, people in the city especially prefer baijiu, liquor containing more than 50% alcohol content by volume. Baijiu is called the national alcohol. Moutai is especially well-known, and has been selected as one of the top eight high-quality Chinese liquor brands. Baijiu can be classified as higher category (more than 50% alcohol content by volume) and lower category (around 38% alcohol content by volume). It is said that the former is generally more delicious.
