At PT. Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Indonesia (SEHI), we launched operations in 2012 as a sales company of hardmetal products in Indonesia. The company engages in sales and technical services in order to accommodate the increasing demand of tools in the continuously expanding fields of automobiles and two-wheeled vehicles, as well as to meet the localization needs of the procurement. In addition, since some customers purchasing our products in Indonesia also conduct business in Thailand, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia, we play a role as a strategic marketing center in the region.

Working Hard Every Day to Provide High-Level Service for Customers, by Ensuring Close Communication with Local Staff

In Indonesia, the demand for cutting tools comes mainly from the automobile and two-wheeled vehicle industries. Since the market share of Japanese products is more than 90% in both industries, most of our customers are Japanese-affiliated companies. Accordingly, by ensuring close cooperation with sales forces in Japan, we encourage users to adopt our tools for their new projects. Aiming for an overwhelming No. 1 market share in this country by taking advantage of Sumitomo Electric’s high market share in Japan, we work hard every day to present a wide variety of proposals to customers to sell our products.

I was transferred to this country in March 2012, when a new business was launched. I am responsible for sales, accounting, administration, and HR management, with my focus on employing excellent individuals, training them, and reinforcing our organization. Since legal systems frequently change, I am sometimes confused, especially in the fields of accounting and administration. However, I work very hard every day to develop young local staff members, whose average age is 31, and to ensure that we provide high-level service for customers. Since our in-house official language is English, which is not a native tongue for either Japanese or local staff members, I always try to have close communication with staff members. In a somewhat tense but cheerful atmosphere, we work very hard, sometimes exchanging jokes.

Profiles of Local Staff Members

Ms. Wongso Giokti

Ms. Wongso Giokti

Hello, everyone. My name is Wongso Giokti. I’m a member of the administration and accounting section. I joined SPMI, the forerunner of SEHI, in 2008. Partly because there were only three local members at the company in those days, I was able to experience a wide variety of tasks, and I am grateful for it. I am truly pleased that I can work as a member of the Sumitomo Electric Group. By taking advantage of the experience that I have accumulated so far, I will continue to do my best to help the company achieve its targets. At the same time, I would like to ensure the growth of not only the company, but also myself.

Mr. Naldi Fedrian

I am Naldi Fedrian, a sales engineer. When I joined this company three years ago, I learned about the Sumitomo Spirit. Placing my focus especially on shinyo kakujitsu (place importance on integrity and sound management) as my motto, I always strive to provide service from the perspective of customers.

In Indonesia, the automobile industry is growing, generating more and more business opportunities for related tools. To further strengthen Sumitomo, one of the strongest cutting-tool brands in this country, I would like to do my best.

Giant Metropolis with an Ever-Increasing Number of High-Rise Buildings and One of the Largest Populations in the World

Jakarta, Giant Metropolis

High-rise buildings in Jakarta

Jakarta is a giant metropolis boasting one of the largest populations in the world. Before being transferred to this city, I imagined Jakarta as a small city located in the middle of the jungle. But in reality, there are many young people in the vigorous city, where the number of newly constructed modern high-rise buildings is continuing to increase. This makes me realize the country’s excellent growth potential.

Unexpectedly Comfortable Early Morning and Evening

Since the city is located in a tropical zone at 6 degrees south latitude near the equator, the sunlight and temperature during the daytime are severe as expected. However, it is less humid here than in Japan, and a refreshing wind often blows in the early morning and evening. Some people who visit this country from Japan on business in summer say that it is much more comfortable in the city than in hot and stuffy Japan.

Shopping Malls

Large, modern shopping malls are found almost everywhere in the city. Since it is hot outside during the day, many families and couples visit these facilities especially on holidays, and relax inside the air-conditioned malls. Japanese dishes are available in such shopping malls, and ramen shops are especially popular. Recently, udon noodles are also becoming popular. In step with the growth of the middle class, the number of similar shopping malls constructed in the suburbs is also increasing.
