Sumitomo Electric Fine Polymer (Suzhou) Ltd. (SFPZ) is fully owned by Sumitomo Electric Fine Polymer Inc. (SFP). Established in December 2005 in Suzhou, SFPZ manufactures heat-shrinkable tubing (Sumitube™) as its main product. The company serves as a strategic key for expanding the Sumitomo Electric Group’s fine polymer business in the fields of automobiles, electronics, railway vehicles and infrastructure, targeting the rapidly growing Chinese market. SFPZ is thus positioned as an important manufacturing base.

Instructing Staff and Implementing Training Programs to Achieve Operation Localization and Improve Operation Efficiency

SFPZ is located in Suzhou City in Jiangsu Province, approximately 100 km west of Shanghai. We manufacture heat-shrinkable tubing, heat-resistant tapes, rollers for copying machines, and some other items used in a wide variety of fields, such as automobiles, electronics, railway vehicles, and infrastructure. We sell them to customers in the Chinese market via Sumitomo Electric (Shanghai) Electronics, Ltd., and to customers in other Asian countries via other overseas group companies. Compared with most of the Sumitomo Electric Group’s fine polymer production bases outside Japan, we boast equipment that enable the production of a wider variety of products. As a result, our local production percentage of the products that we sell is more than 80%.

Today, we are confronting rapid appreciation of the Chinese yuan (meaning, depreciation of the yen) and a rise in our labor costs. Thus, our recent important theme regarding further expanding our businesses and becoming even more competitive in the Chinese market is cost reduction through enhanced production efficiency, and the acceleration of quality improvement, as well as further promotion of localization of our production.

I am involved in all aspects of the company’s operations, mainly management of the manufacturing departments. While striving to further promote localization of our operations and improve our operational efficiency even more by pushing forward the above theme, I’m working hard on training our local staff members.

It is a pity that since many staff members at SFPZ speak Japanese, my Chinese proficiency is not improving so much, despite my fortunate opportunity to work in this country.

Lu Ting ting

Lu Ting ting

Go-anzen-ni (Maintain safety), everyone! I’m Lu Ting ting. Since joining SFPZ in 2010, I have been engaged in manufacturing management, and since two years ago, I have been involved in safety management as well. Since at first I did not have any knowledge about safety management, I actively participated in safety seminars organized by the Sumitomo Electric Group. Now that I’ve obtained specific activity methods regarding safety management, safety patrols, risk assessment, etc., I implement them actively for the company. Filled with energy and passion, SFPZ is a company with a strong sense of responsibility to society. To make the company the world’s No. 1 manufacturer of heat-shrinkable tubing, I will continue to work very hard!

Zhu Hong-jun

Zhu Hong-jun

Hello, everyone. I am Zhu Hong-jun of the Engineering and Environment Section. From October 2006, when I joined SFPZ, to 2013, I worked in the Quality Assurance Section, learning a lot about the quality of heat-shrinkable tubing. Currently, using this experience as a member of the Engineering and Environment Section, I’m involved in promoting localization of the production to expand the company’s sales. Although I’ve experienced a wide variety of successes and failures so far, I’ve been able to develop myself, giving me a feeling of achievement. This is totally thanks to the support from my supervisors and coworkers. Suzhou is attractive in terms of not only business but also other aspects. The city has beautiful gardens and orchards. While playing, you can study history and politics. If you have an opportunity, please visit Suzhou!

Speedy Extension of the Subway Lines!!

Railway

In 2012, a little while before I transferred to SFPZ, the first subway line (total length: 26 km) became available, followed by a second line (streetcar) in 2014. Currently, construction for the third and fourth lines is underway here and there around the city. I hear that the ultimate goal of the plan is to construct the subway lines with a total length of 380 km. All the stations and cars are still new, and they are clean and comfortable.

In addition, there are many taxis and city buses around town, providing convenient access anywhere. It takes only 30 minutes to get to Shanghai by high-speed rail.

An electronics market is located right near where I live. The four-story building houses many tenants carrying a wide array of items from digital products to fine electronics parts.

I feel that nearly everything one needs to repair electrical products and equipment is available here.

Amusement Area and Sightseeing Spots

Some guidebooks refer to Suzhou as the “Venice of the Orient.” A river runs through the center of the city, where several World Heritage sites are scattered. On a fine day, I sometimes stroll around the city and appreciate the atmosphere of the typical Chinese amusement area.
