Mass Production of Base Material for Optical Fiber Launched in Tianjin, China

Tianjin SEI-Futong Optical Fiber Co., Ltd, (SFFT), a joint venture established by Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. and the major optical fiber cable Chinese manufacturer Futong Group Co., Ltd. (Futong Group), has commenced mass production of the base material for optical fiber, using cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art equipment.
Presently, in China the establishment of information infrastructure is progressing rapidly under the government’s policy of “Broadband China,” making the country the world’s largest consumer in the optical fiber industry. It is expected that the establishment of the infrastructure for 4G mobile phones and expansion of the FTTx network will continue to strongly increase the demand for optical fiber.
SFFT is the second full-scale manufacturing facility for the base material for optical fiber, following Hangzhou SEI-Futong Optical Fiber Co., Ltd, established in Fuyang, Zhejiang. SFFT will supply the base material for optical fiber to joint optical fiber manufacturers established in China by Sumitomo Electric Industries and the Futong Group.
Sumitomo Electric Industries and the Futong Group will promote further merging of the former’s high-level technologies, including for manufacturing the base material, and the latter’s strong sales capabilities, and thereby sell optical fiber products across China and become the leader in the industry.

Winner of the JPMA Awards 

In the 36th (2014) Japan Powder Metallurgy Association (JPMA) Awards, our development of complex-shaped synchronizer hubs with a helical gear for Dual clutch transmission(DCT), a type of automobile transmission, won the New Product award in the New Design category. In addition, our development of DCT synchronizer hubs using laser hardening technology won the New Product award in the Process Development category.

We won the award because we have successfully begun mass producing the thin-section, complex-shaped helically geared components, which feature high density and precision. Other reasons include our achievement of a production high of 20,000 units per month, and for being a new development for DCT key components, thus establishing a base for further DCT component development, since these are expected to increase in number.

We were honored because laser hardening has realized high precision and low cost, and also because the technology is new in being environment-friendly. Other reasons include the product’s good record of mass production and the high potential of introducing the technology to other applications.
