*This press release was issued on November 13, 2014 in Japan.

Sumitomo Electric Industries developed NPDB Mold Finish Master SUMIDIA binderless ballnose endmills, which to use nano-polycrystalline diamonds (NPD) in the cutting edge of ballnose endmills. They ware stocked as standard from October 2014, and sales were launched.

In February 2012, Sumitomo Electric Industries developed the first cutting tool in the industry to use nano-polycrystalline diamonds (NPD), consisting of minute nano-sized particles directly and solidly bonded together, in the cutting edge of ballnose endmills. Build-to-order manufacturing was launched in April 2013. Three cutting tool radius sizes of R0.3, R0.5 and R1.0 were stocked as standard from October 2014, and sales were launched.

1.Characteristics

Micromachining ball end mills

NPD are generated from graphite under extremely high pressure and high temperatures by special manufacturing techinology. Because the minute diamond particles that have radii of several dozen nanometers are solidly bonded directly, without any binder materials, they are harder than single-crystal diamonds while having no cleavage feature. Moreover, compared to conventional sintered diamonds (PCD), they have a sharp cut and offer superior quality in the machining surface. Furthermore, the contour accuracy of the endmill cutting edge has been improved, so superior accuracy of machining dimensions can be maintained for extended periods of time in the machining of hard brittle materials such as cemented carbide used in optical and precision forging dies.
